What is a good, practical gun collection.

I'm just curious as to what you guys feel is a good, practical gun collection. I have been streamlining mine lately and think I have all that I need. That doesn't come close to meaning all that I want. When I say practical I'm speaking of a brace of weapons that will not only allow me to hunt effectively for sport and offer good protection but also serve as do it all guns in an unlikely shtf sitiuation. Mind you, I was raised to pay more attention to function over appearance and that belief shows up in my purchases. Here goes.
1. Mossberg ATR .308 Good for all game pigs, deer, goat and above.
Anything in North America within its range.
2. Winchester 94 30-30 My first deer gun and still my scoutin' gun.
3. Savage 63 .22lr with decent glass. Squirrels, rabits, etc.
4. Mossberg 550 12 ga 28" mod choke. Birds big and small.
5. NEF 20 ga single. Good back-up for small game and smaller birds.
6. High Standard 1911 .45acp. If its good enough for Magnum, then its good enough for me.
7. CZ 75b 9mm. My primary handgun knowing there's trouble brewing. The capacity and accuracy of the CZ put it above my other handguns.
8. Bersa UC 9. This is my CCW. Great little gun.
9. Ruger Security Six .357 mag 4". My Hunting backup.

Add a 18" or NFA 12 gauge as well as a AR-15 and I'd say you would have an absolutely amazing setup! But what do I know, I only have two firearms, and the ones I mentioned at that!

I do have one .22. The Savage63. Accurate gun for a little cheapy. I am thinking of getting an 18" barrel for the Mossy from CTD for $75. I guess the think I lack is a battle type rifle. I don't like the term "assault rifle". I had a Ruger Mini .223 but I didn't care for it. I could add an sks for a couple hundred. I also have a .357 ruger service six not listed. I'm thinkin of swapping this for either a .22 pistol such as Browning or a 10/22 rifle. Though, as I said, I already have a .22.

Your question is sort of vague, but a collection of guns you use or at least have a use for would or could constitute a practical collection. Your posted guns show a good diversity and have various uses for each. Keep adding guns and it will no longer be a collection, but an untreatable compulsion. This is of course just my opinion, but you asked. As opinions are they very from person to person.

I yes, I know the compulsion. I have culled this collection that at one point or another included a couple other 12 gauges 20 gauges, .22's .223's, 9mm's, 9mm carbines, 30-06's..............

As Winston Churchill was once reported to have said, "This pudding has no theme!" What you have there is a "accumulation" and not so much a "collection." Nothing wrong with that, but what it seems you're going for is a bag of tools for different uses. A true collection would have some sort of unifying theme -- Colts, Winchesters, U.S. military weapons, etc.

I think you have a useful and diverse group of guns, maybe lacking for some rimfire handguns and possibly an AR-15 or AK variant. Everything you have seems to be purpose driven and quite practical as it stands right now.

You need a firearm for whatever use you're likely to put it to, obviously, but there is no need to overthink it. One person's "practical" is another's frivolous.

imo a well rounded collection amounts to:

scoped boltgun in .30
semi auto .223 carbine
pump 12 ga bird gun
.410
.22 rifle and pistol
.357/.44 with a barrel length of at least 4"
9mm/.40/.45(whatever you prefer) "combat type" pistol
a centerfire levergun (45-70 if big game is an issue)
"combat type" shotgun

that should cover most needs

That's a pretty well rounded collection that will cover most things. The only things you seem to be lacking are a single action revolver, a large bore revolver (.44 special or greater) and something used by a (non-ally) foreign military.

You could take care of the first two things with one gun. Perhaps a Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44 magnum. The other category could be filled by any number of firearms. You could go with an AK variant, a pistol in 9mm Makarov, Mosin Nagant, 98 Mauser, etc.

Heck.... I just thought about it you could fill all of the categories with a single action revolver chambered in .44 Russian. If you buy one of the old S&W ones, you'll be getting a gun to cover the not really "needed" but fun to have "antique design" and "obsolete cartridge" categories too.

Your collection is utilitarian and tends to lean toward the less expensive firearms. You may need a 22LR handgun or two, and probably a tactical rifle of some sort for the fun of it. The CZ is a good little 9mm.

I have been streamlining mine lately and think I have all that I need.

But you have all you need and probably then some. That is all that's important as far as I'm concerned.

My idea of a practical collection would probably differ from yours. Most of my collection are guns I use, with some just kept for sentimental reasons.
Most would wonder why I don't have a centerfire rifle. I don't shoot them hence don't own any.
If money were no object, god only knows what I'd have...lol. I'm sure there would be a full auto in there somewhere....

You are set up. Just a good handgun that you can carry and for the house, a 22 rifle for hunting and fun, a good deer rifle, and a shotgun for hunting, clays, and protection.
