Id like to mark my magazines to distinguish them one from another in terms of what ammo they hold and to identify age or malfunctions.

Paint?
Tape?
Etching?

Most folks I see use a paint marking pen, silver colored Sharpie marker, or something similar to number their mags. You want to pick whatever part of the mag has the least wear on it so your number will remain visible the longest. Some folks mark the base-plates with a white marker which seems to hold up ok.

If you have an electro-pencil engraver that will be most durable but is hard to see.

I've had good luck on aluminum, steel, and polymer magazines using Krylon paint pens. Some of the aluminum & steel ones have seen years of fairly hard use and the painted numbers have held up well. I can't speak to the long term durability on polymer yet.

I have a Carbide scratch/engraver and I simply scratch a number into the plastic baseplate.

I hit the bottom half of my mags with a swipe of red paint on both sides so I can identify them in a highpower match with lots of AR mags floating around the line.

Most are not marked at all, but have used color coded pads with caliber designations on a few.

I used Appliance White Touch-up paint a few years ago to mark several different magazines.

So far, it looks as good on all of them as the day I did it.

I use a label maker and put make and cal on each mag. "Glock .40", "1911 .45ACP", "BHP 9mm", "BHP .40" ect. When you have 40-50 auto loaders it makes life a little less complicated. Especially when you may have several that look alike, like the HiPower 9mm vs .40S&W.

I wrap colored electrical tape around the bottom and write my initials on the side, and the number of the mag on the back. For AR15s, I just have groups of mags with different ammo (e.g. factory vs reloads, and m118 vs m118LR in the 308 PMAGs) since i keep a lot of loaded AR15 mags on hand. For my bolt guns, the color goes with the rifle.

in the past, i have also taken PMAGs and pulled the base plate off and spray painted it. It looks nice, but i now prefer tape

in this pic, you can see the red tape on AICS mag. i applied white tape to the AIAW mags a few days later.
