S&W M29 .44 magnum

"The most powerful handgun in the world."

Well it used to be anyway. Dirty Harry did it right.

I can see why some would have trouble deciding between the SSA and the 1911 until you realize that the SAA for the most part left it's mark on the country.

The 1911 left it's mark on the world.

stevelyn

I chose the 1911 with the S.A.A. as a tough second. Had I read this prior to choosing...well?

Goop point Steve and well said.

Colt SAA, without any hesitation. I live in Europe (the Continent, not in the EU thank God), and I can tell you that anybody over here would recognise a Colt SAA as being the "Far West gun", the gun that made America. However historically wrong, that image, thanks to Hollywood, will stay.
The 1911, on the other hand, wouldn't mean much to non gun enthusiasts and certainly wouldn't be recognised as American by the average Joe...

whoever said "even non gun people recognize a 1911" needs to get out more!
I fired my first firearm in 1972, Since then i have been involved with firarms and hunting (mostly sporting firarms) pretty continuously. that being said, up to about 3 years ago when i got interested in CCW I couldnt distinguish a 1911 from any other semi auto pistol.

1911 A1

With out a doubt the 1911. It has pulled duty along with the American solider all over the world for years.

A very close second is the Colt SAA 45, considering its know as the gun that tamed the West according to American History. Looking into the barrel of an old Colt 45 must have been a sobering sight.

.357 Magnum

in whatever frame size you want. I'd pick the 3 1/2" M27 myself... RED White and Blue !!

Heck, even the French police bought Smith .357's, when they could have ordered any other 'Merican pistol!!

:D

M1911A1

Can't be another answer. I teethed on mine - had it since I was a teen, and that was over 30 years ago. Carried one in the Army.

I love the Colt SAA, never had enough bucks to own one, though came close.
It has a special place in our history and will always be #2 on this list. Love my K-frame too, but it doesn't even have a big place in history. Millions of GIs have bet their lives on the rugged M1911A1 since WWI and still do to this day. There's a lot to be said for all the others, but there is no other FIRST PLACE holder.

I happened to me as I read through your posts, most of you folks who watch a lot of TV voted for the SAA, and good for you. Most of us who served in the military while you were home watching TV voted for the combat weapon. Nuff said.

I still carry my nasty old GI, WWII issued .45 and still am willing to bet my life on it. I dunno where all my other stuff goes when I go to my own final reward, but that one stays in the family. And I'm not the only one who feels that way!

ouch!,hey actually you make a good point, true that I've never served, still like to think of myself as a patriot though:D .jjohnson,we may differ on the poll but then again I consider those who used the 1911 to defend the constitution as all American heros though, like you.

Heck, even the French police bought Smith .357's,

That's it, I'm sellin' off my .357s! Don't want no coward's gun!:p

:D

Ah, maybe I can keep the Ruger. It's a Blackhawk, all American single action revolver.

Didn't Teddy Roosevelt carry a SAA up San Juan Hill? He was a veteran, American war hero, right? Of course, if Custer would have had 1911s, well.....:D Ah, 10,000 Souix against a couple hundred white eyes? He'd still have gotten scalped.

Sorry, LionKing

Um... didn't mean to step on your paw.

Point was, though, another poster made it, the Colt SAA was great... it helped shape this country. For a few years. It's a landmark and part of our heritage.

The M1911A1, though, has been carried into harm's way all over the entire planet by literally millions of GIs who still love them. It's been there when and where history was made by US military force for nearly a century. That's tough to beat, even if it (the sidearm) isn't in famous western films, though William Holden is carrying a M1911A1 (Pike, Holden's character in the movie) in The Wild Bunch.

Anyway, no offense was intended and no claim to being a hero. Being a vet doesn't mean I think less of civilians, it's just an experience that changes one's perspective on stuff. :D

I agree jjohnson,and I was'nt offended at all.I need to see that movie,sounds good.

A genuine, GI 1911A1. Nothing says "US" like a good ol' larger-than-9mm, all-metal, millions/billions strong "army" of 1911's. Immense service life, good stopping power, still treasured and sought after a good 90 years later, and there's still talk of re-adopting it for the military. I mean, it helped us (the allies, I mean......cough cough) with two world wars, and those who have a choice seem to carry them even in Iraq. Definitely a good ol' 1911.

Followed closely by the SAA. Designed in america, built in america, used in america, and it's just classic. 1911=iconic, SAA=classic. IMHO, of course.

But the wild west hasn't existed for over a hundred years now, and even big deal cowboy movies haven't hit the theaters for decades (unless you want to count brokeback? ). Lots of young people haven't even seen one before... including me. I've never seen a john wayne or a clint eastwood flick, ever. I vote 1911.

Colt SAA! You have lived a sheltered life, obviously.:scrutiny:

I've never seen a john wayne or a clint eastwood flick, ever.
:what: You've definitely just shown your age. Those are some of the best movies on the planet, IMHO. The Longest Day, Dirty Harry(s), The Good/Bad/Ugly,.........go to blockbuster, see if you don't wind up loving the SAA.

The SAA is an "american gun for americans", I'd say--but the 1911a1 has represented "the American gun" to the Austrians/Prussians, Nazis, Italians, Japanese, French, British, and goodness knows how many other foriegn armys that we either fought for/with or against.

All you need do to catch Eastwood or the Duke is watch AMC channel. If they ain't runnin a James Bond flick (love those, too, PPK and all), they're runnin' the Duke or Eastwood. Sometimes they'll vary, like Rambo or the Governator might show up. Most times it's the Duke or Eastwood, though. :D

Jeez, suddenly, I have the Star Spangled Banner playin' in my head.:scrutiny:

"James, whatever you're doing, pull out now."

"James, is Ms Goodnight there?" "Hold on sir, she's cumming."

Bwaaaaa, ha, ha, ha!

Oh Darn!!

Since we play with all of them, Being a normal female, I couldn't make up my mind on a bet. I consider the Smith K frame the perfect revolver, owning more than my share, but that goes for the 1911s too. When my husband asked me if I could only have one gun which would it be?? My circuits fried.

The 1911, not because of it's recognizability, it's service, but because of it's individuality. No other Amercian handgun has been so customized, mutated, rebuilt, redsigned, and generally abused. It's something that can and is molded to the individual tastes of the owner becoming at the same time a common handgun and a one of a kind. No other handgun comes close. Everything from historic war horses to single shot rifle cartridges and even black powder guns have grown from the basic 1911 design. It is like the American people. A common community created by an infinate variety of individuals. And that's why I voted the 1911.

1911 is american like apple pie.

Carried one in the military for three years oversees. I have noticed one thing over the years when is the last time you have seen a LEO carrying a 1911 in the line of duty?

Something in the pearl handle? The 1911 is a very accurate firing weapon, but there like some american cars after so many miles they will breakdown and need to be repaired. I have a poll?

If you fire 25,000 rounds through either a Glock or 1911A1 which one will need to be repaired the most?

Just curious that's all.
