I am trying to find out the best deer gun available. Just asking. Curiosity reasons only. All opinions are welcome!!! Need sound advice.:)

jeannie this is probably in the wrong section but we need more info, like where you'll be hunting,is the terrain heavily wooded or open with long draws, clear cuts, etc. It is for primarily Alabama?
Give us more. The options are infinite.

That's kind of like asking what the best car is. It's waaay too broad to really answer definitively, and even then, about 50% of the answer is personal opinion.

Wow that is still to broad IMO. Who will be shooting it you? What type of expierence do you have? There are just too many options that are best for one but terrible for another. I will say .30-30 is a pretty good all around round inside of 150-200 yards. .243 would also be good round for little longer shots. Heck SKS would even be a good deer gun in a lot of places.

.257 Roberts... Can be used on Black Bear and Elk as well. Great round, shoots well, not a lot of recoil at all.

25-06 rem. powerful enough for long range shots, deadly at close range, very managable recoil for anyone, and any size, being man or woman. And can be loaded down for varmits, or heavy for deer, even elk. All around great gun.

But you can't go too wrong with Winchester 94 or Marlin 336 in 30-30

I like that pick and also the 35 Remington in lever guns.
For bolt action the .243,.257 Roberts and the old standby for almost everything in the lower 48, the .270.
All these should work fine in Alabama's diverse terrain.

Thanx you all. I was just wondering what your opinions were. I am looking for my hubby a new rifle for his bday, and thought I'd ask. He hunts with a semi-automatic 270. And he has a semi-auto 30.06 and a semi-auto 12 gauge. So, I was wondering if there were deer guns better than the ones he already owns. He has a friend that swears his 308 is the best deer gun ever made.. which he is entitled to his opinion as we all are. Thanxs for all the help. ;)

If your hubby has a 270 and a 30-06, then he has rifles in two of the best deer calibers anywhere. The the 30-06 and the 308 you mention are prcatically identical when it comes to hunting deer.
If you want to get him a new deer rifle, you might consider getting him a $500 gift card to Outdoor World or Cabela's, because within a few hours, this post will have so many different opinios as to the "best deer gun" that it'll make your head swim.
Good luck!!

Jeannie29,

Seems he's hung-up on semi-auto's.

I'd get him a bolt-action with a nice scope. Since he already has a .270, that would be a good choice.

The various "Mart" carry the Remington M700 which is about as good a rifle as can be had. (considering the US military uses a version for a sniper rifle).

Or, you could get him a really good scope to go on one of his existing rifles.

I prefer a mid-power scope. Something like the Leupold 2.5-8x VX3 would make his day ! Or for about half as much, the Nikon ProStaff 3x-9x with BDC reticle is excellent.

Those new Marlin 336's set up for the new Leverevaloution ammo, are worth a look see, they are available in some chamberings that duplicate the ballistics of the .308 .

These new hot flat shooting calibers were not available to Marlin lever gun shooters due to the fact of the tublar feed magazine that is on all Marlin leverguns, but with the new soft nose Leverevaloution, ammo they are ballistically equal to most bolt and auto rifles out to 300 yds.

for what my 2cents is worth

if I were you, I would invest my $ in meat processing equipment such as a good meat bone saw, good freezer paper, markers, boning knives, meat slicer and other equipment such as this.

Here in IL the locker plants, charge outlandish prices for processing deer.

A lot of guys in this area get together and do 2 to 10 deer at somebody's house because they can't afford the locker plants prices.

It's your $ you have to decide how you want to spend it.

Good luck! Let us know how you decided.

If he's already got a 30-06, I think he's set (the .270 will work too). That said, if I could have only one deer gun, it would be something in 7mm Rem Mag; a bolt action with a nice quality scope.

Best is relative. My best is a Remington Model 700 BDL in 270 win. Best to just think caliber and then move to choosing a rifle. In which case, my standard whitetail recommendation is 270-30-06-308 or something similar. IF you take long shots commonly, then think 7mm Rem Mag or 300 win Mag; dealing with the recoil doesn't make them as fun unless you just need the extra reach.

All that said, I generally hunt with a scoped revolver these days as I don't really care about quantity anymore.

Okay, woods hunting. That means that a rifle set up for long range isn't necessary. Light and handy works just fine, with such examples as the Win 94 and the Marlin 336. Or, depending on a person's size, "youth" rifles; and then such as the Remington Model 7.

Generally, scopes are a big help for first and last light of the day. Mid-day, iron sights are fine. Me, I like scopes largely because of my eyesight: Old age and tri-focals.

Again, generally, bolt-action rifles are easiest for a novice to learn to shoot both accurately and safely. This last is, to me, a really important part when it's somebody new to shooting and hunting.

Suggestion: Go to a gunshow and/or to a major gun store. Feel and fondle and check for fit.

Cartridge? Not critical. I'd prefer the .243 on the small end, and for the hunting situation as described, no more than a .308.

2¢ worth...
