Hello all.
Picked up a nice Colt made reproduction 3rd Dragoon.
This one came in the black box with the gold end label. I think these were made in the early 1980's.
I'd like to replace the factory nipples with the newer tech bronze nipples.
What thread are these?
Looked at Track of the Wolf, Dixie, and Possibles Shop but I'm still not sure which I need.
Thanks for any help.

Do you have any way to measure them? They might be 1/4x28 or metric 5.5x.9, Early Uberti and Euroarms take 6x.75. Hardware stores would have 14/28 to compare with but not those metric sizes.

Mr. Texas moon, i know you are set on getting the Treso ampco made nipples but they are no longer considered the "highest" tech nipples on the market. May i suggest the stainless steel Slixshot nipples...they have a larger combustion chamber and vent holes to allow a release of back pressure. Ive tried all the nipples available and i prefer these...and for a large gun that holds a higher charge the vent holes will be a huge plus. If you decide that treso type nipples with no vent holes is still something you want then id go with track of the wolfs version that are made of stainless steel..even they explain that their stainless steel is harder than the ampco material Treso uses.

Cracks me up. I have pistols 20+ and one 46 years old and never ever have I had any issues with any of the nipples.

Mr.skeeterfogger...i too am one who has no real issue with stock nipples, they work great. The only problem i have come across that i wish would be addressed by the gun manufacturers and percussion cap makers is to agree to a standardized size. Stock nipples to me are great...just that they usually run a bit too small to be used with Remington #10 & #11 and CCI #11 caps. To make the nipples "thicker" i put a thin smear of JB weld around the cone ...so thin its almost see through and then sand down to the perfect thickness as to hold a percussion cap tightly. Works great. Ive also experimented by drilling out the combustion chamber of the cone to be larger kinda how Slixshot nipples have a larger combustion chamber and from what i can see it actually does allow more spark to the powder. Not everyone has the time and/or tools to do these things so they just huy replacement nipples...and when it comes to aftermarket nipples my opinion is Slixshots are one of the best.

I would like to add that someone named Idahoron posted a youtube video about the problems he encountered with Treso nipples made for TC rifles.
He found that the flash hole was approximately .028 for Treso Ampco nipples compared to .035 for Hot Shot nipples.
Perhaps that's how the Treso nipples manage to relieve back pressure although he made no direct measurement to compare them to Slixshot nipples.

The Treso nipples were also found to have wider nipple flats compared to the Hot Shot nipple [rifle nipples in this case], which were too wide to fit his rifle nipple wrench
and which required filing them down to size in order for his nipple wrench to fit [ .198 vs. .213].
Also the Treso Ampco nipple cones were too small in diameter for #11 caps to fit them properly.
This meant that he had to "bump up" the lip of the cone by tapping it with a hammer in order for #11 caps to fit snug enough to not fall off while hunting.

This is not a direct comparison of the flash hole diameters between Treso vs. Slixshot nipples, even though there could be a difference.
But it shows that replacement nipples are not all made to the same spec's.

Thanks for the info.
I was able to determine this one was made in 1977 by serial number search.
