I came across one today. It is in good shape the metal and bore is in good
shape. I can buy it pretty cheap and it is not a reproduction.
what do you all think? Could it be a repro. It does have marks on the stock and the barrel looks old. But the whole rifle looks old, but it is shooter.
Last week I picked up a Colt dragoon"the four lb." 44 nib. No box or paper work.
made by uberti. Some people just don't know what they have.......$250

It sounds like it was a good deal for you on a good model.
I don't know much about trapdoors, but I've seen original shooters at gunshows to be had. Sometimes the barrels are shortened a little bit and I've seen new stocks put on old guns to spruce them up.
How much for the rifle, under $400?
Do you already reload?

Scat i haven't got the trap door yet....but i do have the colt. I
don't know how to post pictures. I will try tonight. the dragoon is new and never shot.
the trap door is 700.

Scat if it is alright I'll send you the picture of the Dragoon and maybe you can post them. I'm going to put it up for sale I think.......

The trap door if I buy the rifle I will keep it. If I don't I will post the mans address. I will take pictures of the colt to night Scrat. No I have never reloaded.
If i get the trap door I will start. I know it is hard to learn, but I will. I have a lead furnace and lots of lead. I do all my round balls for my BP.

Campbell, the .45-70 is the easiest of all cartridges to load.To start buy one Lee Loader hand loading tool, one Lee .45-70 mold [I like the hollow based, but they make a couple, just pick one over 350 grain in .459] and you probably have everything else you need.

IF you buy a Trapdoor Springfield, the next purchase should be the book "Loading Cartridges for the Original .45-70 Springfield Rifle and Carbine" by Spencer Wolf. It details how to load accurate and effective ammo for the 45-70 and 50-70. Spence also worked with Lee to develop a special set of reloading dies for the project. I am not saying other dies won't work, just that if you want to feed the old rifle (or carbine) properly, get the right gear to do it.

Here is a link to the site.

The book is geared specifically to trapdoors but much of the info is usable by anyone who loads black powder for cartridges. Well researched and worth the money.

Trapdoors are great rifles and a lot of enjoyment can be had from them when they are loaded properly. Reloading is not hard, it is a lot of fun and necessary if you want to shoot with any regularity.

Good luck.

I know that is a spring field musket. I know what a trap door is, too. I have about 25 black powder rifles, pistols and revolver's. The musket may go up for sale. That is why the picture. If I buy the trap door I will post pic's. This is not my first walk around the range.

Thanks for web page about reloading. I have been there and the price for the die's.
are nt ba I posted pic's of the colt dragon just to show it off. I'm retired so I have to wait till the first of July for the funds. Pretty sure I will buy it. I picked up
220 lb @ 65 dollars. And it is pure Lead. That is around 43 cents a lb.

Trust me, you need a 45-70. I've never had as much fun shooting a rifle as with that caliber. It can do it all - light smokeless loads for plinking, full house black powder with a 540 grain cast bullet for silhouettes, or hot loaded with a jacketed bullet for dangerous game. Now, the trap door can't handle the ridiculous loads that modern guns can, but even black powder loads at trapdoor levels are plenty powerful. It's a very accurate round for a big bore, too.

One of the local gun shops has a trapdoor that some jerk cut down the barrel on and shortened the stock. I'd love to buy it and make a nice sporting carbine, but I don't have the dough right now.

I'am mot for sure yet.......I myght sell the musket on the rifle post. I'm into
being a mountian man. I can't do civil war too. I have already sold two Zouaves. Still have a union officer's belt and holster. and a little bag for your
caps. I want to keep the 2 nd model ragon. They are hard to find + it is a
uberti

Thanks for they looking good
Thanks

Yep, Enfield rifle musket. Use a .577 smoothsided Pritchett ball or a .577 minie ball.

Gary, No what it is is a rifled 58cal. 570, that I used a .010 patch in. I guess you could use a minnie ball I don't know. Like I said before i'm not into the civil war no more. The last rondy I went to was great. With my TC 54
I split a ball on the hawk and put holes in both ends of a playing card. On that Shoot you had a bunch of hard shots. Out of 26 that entered I tied for
3rd. But lost the tie breaker and that moved me down to 4th. On the Mountian Man run I used my 45 penn. pedersoli long rifle. I came in 5th out of seven that entered. Now I have only been shooting BP for a year. Plus as far as the run I'm 60 and can't run as fast as I use to. It could of been luck.......but some of the guys have been shooting 5 years or longer. So it could be luck on the ball splitting. I was in the 20% of the high shooters. I.ll ask Scart to post my card and some of the pictures of the rondy.

jcowan the colt 2nd model is hard to find and this one has never been fired.
I have a few revolvers and 2 others have not been fired. But if I do decide
to sell it I will let you know before i post it. I realy don't think I will. But they say enough money will buy anything. I just don't know in thi gun.

I sold my 3 band this week. I got $375 for it and threw in the belt and holster.
Now I only have revolvers from the Civil War which I shall keep. Also the 58cal.
pistol with a stock. That one to i will keep.
One of these days I will learn how to post pictures.
