In a pinch or for just running some close by errands, I would feel comfortable with either of my Ruger LCR's in 22LR or 22WMR. Otherwise my minimum daily carry is my Ruger LCP in 380 ACP or my LC9.
Assuming that the firearm is:
- reliable
- something I've trained with and can get my hits
I'm thinking .22LR is my cut off point, but If both of those criteria are met, I'm open to consider other options. My primary concerns are that the bullet will get where I want it too. After that, then I'll look at how effective the round is going to be when it gets there, and what some of the other factors are. .22LR may not be as powerful as I would like, but if its the only way I can carry a gun small enough, then I'll take it.
I've done it. Today, in fact. Was working around the property in torn-up work clothes, and left to go to the pool supply store without changing, and had it in a pocket. But, it almost otherwise never gets carried off my property.
It's been kind of a curio for me lately, having been in my possession since 1987, but seeing little use in the last two decades. Always ran well, though.
It has done "beach duty" before, too, in a salty-air environment that will quickly eat up my nicer pieces.
But, my P32 is the same size, and is generally the smallest-caliber one I'll take out.
38 special. It's not that I think a smaller caliber gun would be a waste, but I like revolvers and have large hands. So that means a j frame 38 is as small as I'm willing to go. Maybe a 32acp, but with all the small wonder 9's and now the small 45 XDs , I see no reason to even consider anything smaller.
Since I started carrying about 4 months ago. Anything that shoots a projectile accurately and reliably is much better than the pocket knife I was carrying 4 months ago.
