I don't know a whole lot about wildcat AR cartridges. The more popular ones I know of end at 300 Blackout and start back up again at 450 Bushmaster. Are there cartridges in the mid-range, say .35-.40 or 9-10mm, that are designed for the AR-15?
Outside the pistol caliber carbines, I can't think of anything off the top of my head. I guess you could blow out a 5.56mm case to make something like a straight walled 9mm case, which might be ballistically interesting at close range firing 9mm pistol bullets at really hot velocities, but I don't think anyone has tried it.
I've got one of the D-Tech uppers (see my sig line). Shoots .4's. Took a deer this past week end at 279 yards. My friend that I hunt with just ordered one after seeing how mine performs. Wait is about a year.
Yeah I remembered the 9x39 round for the VSS Vintorez right after I posted this, the .358 Gremlin seems to be based on that. Thanks for the info Gtscotty.
redneck2,
What kind of velocities are you getting out of your .358 WSSM? Is the .358 WSSM restricted in terms of bullet weight? I always thought it looked like a really cool thumper, just couldn't bring myself to lay down the cash and wait that long.
I don't know if the .358 WSSM is on the same power level as the 35 Whelen, but an AR-15 firing a cartridge equivalent to the 35 Whelen would certainly be a thing to behold.... Herd of Grizzlies? Pack of lions? Dinosaur Apocalypse? No Problem!
Most of the guys around here that have them are reporting 2,800 fps range with 200 grain bullets. Haven't crono'd mine yet
It's really nice to shoot. Less recoil than my .458 SOCOM. Took a deer last week end at a lasered 279 yards. 180 grain Hornady Spire Point over 48.6 grains of AA 2015
The link to the .358 Gremlin page has a site with no information on .358 gremlin barrels, rifles, or uppers, although it does say the information is coming in late 2012 (hmm....). Quick websearch shows forums that link to the same page linked in this thread.
