What is your favorite powder for 10mm

For accuracy, Win. 571/Hodgdon HS-7, both of which are discontinued, but I still have several pounds of Win. 571.

For top velocities, 800-X, but it meters like cornflakes.

Blue Dot is good, but is temperature sensitive.

The best all around powder for heavier bullets is probably Accurate #9.

Hope this helps.

Like said above, W571/HS-7 was the best powder for the 10mm before it was discontinued. Now my buddy uses mostly Longshot and he's happy with it. When he can't get Longshot he uses AA#7 instead.

Longshot will generate more velocity than 800X, it's cleaner than 800X and it meters much better. With light bullets I would switch to HS-6(W540) which is the only HS powder still in production.

Longshot has given me the best velocities with no signs of over pressure and good accuracy. I also like Ramshot Silhouette

Another vote for Accurate #7. Works great with all bullet weights and accurate at top velocities.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

I've been loading 10mm since 1986 and probably tried just about everything.

In order I like:

Power Pistol
Longshot
Blue Dot
#7 or #9
800x

And am lamenting the MIA 571

I've been using HS6 and Titegroup. I have some HS7, AA7 and Power Pistol, but haven't had a chance to test it out yet.

AA9 for range loads and 800X for hot stuff and 200grXTP's. It's best to measure 800x on a bar or digital scale as it meters like crap as others have said.

AA#9 for full loads with bullets 180gr and up.

AA#7 for everything short of that.

When you get around to testing HS-7 you are going to wish you didn't. Not because you won't like the results but because you are going to really like the results but the powder is no longer in production.

I have not seen W571 in the stores for longer than I can remember but you can still find HS-7 sometimes.

For the vast majority of powder that I use in mine it would be AA-9 hands down. For the lighter weights I have also used #5 and 7, but not NEARLY in the amounts I have used #9.

What aspect of HS7 is so good? I mostly shoot mild loads and so far have been pleased with the results of HS6 and Titegroup. The can of HS7 i bought is pretty old. Matter of fact, there were 3 cans when I bought it and I got this old one for $10. Maybe I should have bought all three.

I'm a fan of the Alliant powders. I fine Blue Dot to be very good for magnum pistol loads. With Blue Dot, Unique, and Bullseye around I don't yearn for much else.

Winchester 571/HS-7 was the most accurate powder I've ever found for the 10mm. When it was discontinued the first time by Winchester, I bought all the stock Widener's had, and I wish I could have found more. They only had 20 pounds at the time.......

Hope this helps.

I can't say it much better than Fred did but if you are using light loads or light bullets you will get very similar results with HS-6 as you would with HS-7 with heavier loads and heavier bullets. I was/am a big fan of HS-5, HS-6 and HS-7...

Back in the day I was shooting a 10mm, I used AA#7 and duplicated factory Norma ammo (HOT!) with a 200gr XTP. Killed a couple of deer with it. I can't tell the difference between it and a .30/30 rifle at under 75yds.
I don't load for the 10mm any more, and when I load for the .40S&W it's with either WSF or LongShot.

I used HS7 but preferred AA#7 which was hard to find back in the day. Less pressure sensitive, higher velocities.
For lead SWC's, I used a LOT of Trap100(same as Win#452), but it too, has been discontinued.

For accuracy I'd try LongShot or WSF. For speed, AA#7 or AA#9.

IMO; there isn't enough difference between the .40 and 10mm to justify the extra expense of the 10mm. I don't even pick up .40 brass as I already have a lifetime supply of it. I lost a LOT of 10mm brass due to my 1006 throwing it into the next county... But, I was running a 200gr XTP to 1,200fps.... a 180gr at 1,000fps does essentially the same thing, so why the extra expense and effort....

I've killed deer with both and don't see enough difference to justify fooling with the 10mm anymore. The ~50fps difference doesn't mean anything to me.
A 155gr XTP from the .40 at ~1,200fps will drop a deer with aplomb. at ~1,300 from the 10mm, it does exactly the same thing.....

I've also got a can of HS5 that came from an estate sale. No telling how old it is.
