What is your opinion on the Ruger P89?

I had one they always go bang. They are very big and blocky though.

Just bought the other half a p95 for Christmas. A friend has had the .45 version for many years and its never let him down.

Love mine. I have the stainless version with Hogue grips - bought it used in 2001. Don't think I've ever had one jam.

The P89 and P90 are my favorite of the Ruger P series pistols. Mine run well with any type of ammo I put in them and accuracy is more than acceptable. These are very durable firearms which will last a lifetime and beyond.

The only change I made, were the grips. Hogue grips are a nice improvement over the factory plastic, IMHO. This is the style I chose. Of course, there are others.

GREAT pistol. As has already been said, they always go bang. I wouldn't recommend for carry though. Cinder blocks might actually be lighter in a holster.

Good guns that do what they were designed to do - From time to time you hear them referred to as the poor mans Sig. Not sure I agree with that. Ruger makes a great gun, and stands on its own reputation. Personally, I have never been fond of their DA trigger pull. People I know who have them, rarely if ever have problems with them. One larger Sheriff's Offices in our area, issues the P Series 40 S&W to its deputies. They seem to like it.

I have a P89... have had it for ~10 years... it has been my 'take it with you' gun since I got it... it has been wet, dry, clean, dirty, had thousands of rounds through it, dropped off of cliffs, recovered from rivers and it has never skipped a beat, aside from one jam once when a primer popped out of a round and got jammed in the action (an ammo problem, not a weapon problem)

I would recommend it to anyone....

You can tell how heavy it is, and how big it is for yourself... certainly not a weapon I would want on my shoulder every day...

My big brother has one; I never particularly cared for it. Big, heavy, ugly, and the trigger sucks. That being said, it is reliable, accurate, and eats everything in sight (hmmm...maybe that explains "heavy & ugly") so whaddyawant?

I liked mine, I would shoot it alot and never jammed. One thing i did not like with all the ruger semi's ( i have shot the p85 and owned the p89) they have too much take up in the trigger before they fire. Sold mine and and bought a Smith and Wesson 915. If your happy with it then thats all that matters.

I have to agree with most of the rest of the posts on this thread. I have had my P89 for years and it eats anything that I feed it and never misses a beat. you cannot beat for the price and reliability.

I have limited experience with them. The ones I have seen and fired had excellent reliability but were clunky and large for the caliber/capacity. I was not a fan of the trigger or the slide release.

I would feel comfortable defending myself with one, so long as I didn't have to carry it.

they are reliable and they are tough, and ruger is a great company that takes care of thier customers. but they are da'sa and i don't like that. and they are like holding a 2x4"

While my P89 was absolutely reliable, and 5-shot 2" accurate at 25 yards, I have since discovered that reliability and accuracy, while most important, are not my only priorities to consider (I.E. forgetting about fit & finish A.T.M., but the trigger, ergonomics, size, weight & shape of the P89 rank I.m.O pretty low).

So after selling the P89 and moving on to the likes of Sig, GLOCK, and H.K., I don't think I could even recommend one, unless that's absolutely all someone had to spend.
