Looking for defense ammo for the 2 1/4" model. Most likely 38+p but I think I can deal with a mild 357 load in that size weapon.

If I had the 2 1/4" model I'd load These.

They are actually hotter than the Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel .357mag loads that many people like, and with the shorter case you get better extraction.

hornandy critical defense load in 357, shot mine today and it handeld it quite well..

Because someone was nice enough to post this

If his Oregon Trails 148 grain wadcutter penetrtated 36 inches of gelatin and 24" of penetration in gelatin covered with 1/2" ply wood - at 657 fps - imagine what the Buffalo Bore will do in my wife's 13 ounce J Frame at 850 fps and my 3" SP 101 at 961 fps. Low recoil, low flash, and uber penetration. I live in the country so it would be, as a practical matter, impossible to hit a neighbor so over penetration is not an issue. Plus I reload a 800 fps practice rounds for next to nothing.

145-grain STHP. I have typed my reasons so many times lately, I won't do it yet again so soon.

One of the 158 grain SJHP magnums, right now its Remington's 158 grain SJHP. It runs about 1100fps from my 2 1/4" SP101 and about 1150 fps from my 3" one.

Quoting myself from another recent thread:

"In my fixed-sight .357 sixguns, the 145-grain Winchester Silvertips shoot closer to point of aim, so is usually the favored load, especially in my Ruger Speed Six, which is more comfortable (recoil) with the STHPs than the "hotter" 125s.
Recoil is actually less a factor with my SP101s, which really lock well into my grip."

Another vote for the Remington 158 grain Semi-Jacketed HP. The recoil is smooth and it's extremely accurate from my Speed Six. I just wish I could find more of it locally.

I have a secret backstock of Remington LSWCHP .38 Specials, but I like to save those for actual .38's.

After testing 38, 38+P and .357 in my 2.25" SP101, I settled on .38+P. The follow up shots for me are twice as fast, splits at 7 yards are around 0.40 seconds, whereas a .357 is around 0.80. Also, .38 +P is pleasant and enjoyable, but the .357 is punishing. I weigh cost and availability when buying ammo, but here are my "ideal" loads listed in order:

1. Cor-Bon DPX 110 grain +P HP (Gets high velocity, good expansion and penetration.)
2. Speer Gold Dot 135 grain +P Short Barrel JHP (All around great performer)
Tie for third place, (Comes down to cost)
3. Remington 125 grain +P SJHP (The UMC stuff) This round is a winner in actual usage. (Marshall Sanow)
3. Remington 158 +P LSWCHP (Also a winner in actual usage)

I currently load number 2, because #1 is just too expensive. (I found a good deal on Gold Dots) I wouldn't feel underequipped with any of these however.

In my 4", 158 gr LSWCHP with 4.5 grains of Unique (.38 Special brass.) In a 2-1/4", I might use about 4 grains of Bullseye instead.

Hornady 158 gr XTP in my gp100, would do the trick for sd and I feel fine in the woods with it too.

.38SPL (+P) reloads with 125 grain Gold Dot slugs pushed by 6.0 grains Unique and ignited by CCI 500 primer. If out of the Gold Dots, I use plain-jane 125 grain Win JHP slugs with the same rest of the recipe. Enough authority, reasonable recoil.
