Just picked up this rifle from a friend who needed some $$. I was thinking this is some variant of the Remington Model 30... opinions? Caliber is 30-06.

The only markings I can see are an "N" coming from under the scope mount, and a serial number beginning with "58" - I believe it is a 5 digit serial #.

I was thinking this might make a decent backup hunting rifle. He shot 2 cow elk with it last year. Thank you!

Looks kind of like a sporterized 1917 Enfield, or a postwar commercial rifle based on the US Enfield action. Could the "N" you see under the front mount be part of "EDDYSTONE"?

the 1917 Enfield was my first thought. When I looked closer at the markings I could only see an "N" and no "NE".

Whether it's sporterized military, or customized commercial, someone spent some time and money redoing the metal and wood.

Something about that dog leg bolt that gives it away. They are a heavy, rugged and reliable rifle, and the 30'06 is timeless.
I cut my teeth on one similar to that and started my journey in reloading with that rifle some 50 years ago.

GC - yes! That might be the one.

I will double check the serial # tonight. Any place to enter the serial and figure out when it was made? Just forward of the bolt release, on the left side, is a small double-ringed circle with a wing coming off of it...

After WW1, Remington used the WW1 tooling and surplus parts to produce the M30 in 1921 with variations on the model until 1940.
What you have is likely a Remington version of a 1917 Enfield.

That's the US Ordnace "Flaming Bomb" mark, showing that this was indeed a US military issue rifle, originally. This site will tell you the year of manufacture by serial number:

Thank you for all of the help and the great military gun mfg date website!

Although I've only fired 3 rounds through her, she seems to be quite the shooter. Held an inch easily with 165gr GameKings.
