I notice on GunBroker that the asking price for a pre-ban AR15 lower is double to triple ($600) the cost of a currently produced AR15 lower receiver. Why ? I have a pre-ban AR15 and can't tell the difference in the lower on a current production Rock River Arms AR-15. Someone please enlighten me. Thanks in advance for your help.

Some states have assault weapons bans, where the only way to get a standard AR is with a pre-ban lower. $600 is overpriced, $400 isn't unheard of though.

People in very restrictive states will pay a premium for the limited number of "pre-ban" lowers available to them. Much like we'll pay $15k for an auto lower receiver due to the limited number, when the only real difference is a hole for the sear pin. Obviously a different scale, but similar circumstances.

Because you have states like mine, Connecticut, that still have Assault Weapon Bans in place. Within these states are people like me, who for no particular reason have a yearning to have an AR-15 complete with bayonet lug, and a collapsing stock that's NOT pinned in place if I dang well want it.

There's also people that, unlike me, can justify the added expense of the preban receiver/rifle and get that, unfortunatly, as a college student working a stocking job...I'll have to stick with my No-Fed-Ban Stag AR, that unfortunatly is post-CT-ban, and deal with the A2 stock, and the flattened metal where otherwise there would be a bayonet lug.

it could be worse...

you could be having to do what Californians do and pretty much not only neuter your AR, but completely remove "everything else along with it", so to speak.

Oh, trust me, I do appreciate the fact that I live in one of the lesser states as far as restrictions go...but, I still chafe at having to have any neutered guns at all. Ah well, after college, my goal is Vermont...once I get there, I can get all the guns I can afford that are legal under federal law... <fades into a daydream>

LKB3rd- If you look around now, the going rate is up to ~$600. $500-$600 for a cast lower and $600-$750 for a pristine forged A2. A few of the CT dealers have been buying aggressively over the past two years and the price has increased accordingly.

Ridiculous.

I saw a Colt SP1 in excellent shape (looked new really) for $1400 yesterday.

I bought one like it in the 90's for $600 --and this was during the federal ban. It was used a little more, but same thing.

Keep looking and you will find one, the problem is that most folks outside those states don't care or keep track of pre-post ban anymore. In fact, the sunset was a holiday for most of us!

Connecticut is pretty small... No chance of getting the gun clubs, stores and shooters together for a voter initiative? That's what we do here regularly when we don't like the legislature's ideas. We neuter them here, not the other way around.

You guys seem to be mistaken about CT - it doesn't matter when the receiver was made. Preban weapons can only be sold out of state, not transfered in-state and definitely not newly-imported. The owner of a legally-possessed pre-ban "assault weapon" must have a letter from the state declaring it as such, and dated back when they were doing that stuff at the time of the ban going into effect. There was a six or eight month amnesty period, IIRC, to go to your local PD and get the letter.

In NY, I believe, you can dress up a pre-ban lower with anything you want, while you can't legally do the exact same thing with a post-ban lower.

Wow, I stand corrected. I still think it's overpriced, but I guess the going rate has gone up :/ Glad I got mine a few years ago.

Er, Desidog, are you POSITIVE on that? I think that only applies to the ones that are listed by name, not the ones that qualify only by part count...if what YOU'RE saying is true, then my gunshop's been misleading me into a Felony if I even get a preban lower. Not to mention sold some old SKS's that were modified that they'd be assault weapons...

Alright, just checked the law. Gah what dry and boring reading...

"Sec. 53-202m. Circumstances when assault weapons exempt from limitations on transfers and registration requirements. Notwithstanding any provision of the general statutes, sections 53-202a to 53-202l, inclusive, shall not be construed to limit the transfer or require the registration of an assault weapon as defined in subdivision (3) or (4) of subsection (a) of section 53-202a, provided such firearm was legally manufactured prior to September 13, 1994"

53-202A subdivision 3 is the "These parts on a gun makes it an assault weapon", subdivision 4 is the possession of parts to MAKE an assault weapon clause. So, Desi, it DOES only apply to, in this case, recievers marked "AR-15 Sporter" that was manufactured by Colt, or whatever it is exactly called in the law, not any other make/marking of an AR reciever.

In California, we have to have 10 round mags, and a bullet button (modified magazine release that requires a "tool" --an allen wrench, bullet tip, or a set screw installed on a spare magazine -- to release the spent magazine). With the advent of the magazine-mounted tools, it's really not any slower than a normal magazine change. The only limiting factor is the low-cap magazines.

If you do that, you can have all the "evil features" you want (bayonet lug, collapsible stock, pistol grip, flash hider, etc...). We're pretty close to knocking down the semi-auto rifle ban entirely, after which we will have a shot at taking down the low-cap magazine law.

In any case, a lower like this would be worthless in Cali, or worse, would get you an all-expenses paid trip to state prison. We essentially HAVE to have off-list lower receivers, which are, de facto post-ban.
