I've been searching the web for Winchester's 127gr Ranger ammunition for a couple days now and can find nothing. All the auction sites offer 147gr Rangers or the orginal Black Talons at scalper prices.

I would like to buy a couple boxes and perhaps use them for carry in my K9.
Not that I lack confidence in my current carry ammuntion (G-A 115gr +P+ GD), but I do like change now and then.

Thanks in advance!

I dunno, Bub.
The SXT round is pretty much the same as the old B.T.!! Winchester simply renamed it with something less "high profile"!!!
I went to Winchester's site and promptly found that it only comes in 147gr in 9mm Para!!

Here are the specs!!

  • 9mm Luger
    147 gr. Supreme® SXT
Ballistic Coefficient: 0.215 Barrel Length: 4.00" Product Symbol: S9

    Suggested use: Personal Protection
Description: Sure Functioning, Optimum Energy Deposit, Accurate, Controlled Recoil
    Application: -

    Bullet features include:
    Reverse Taper Jacket Design
    Uniform Bullet Expansion
    Excellent Accuracy
    Positive Functioning

The civillian stuff is not the same, it's not the fact that they don't have the talons that make the difference, it's a different bullet altoeather. Winchester doesn't ballistically test their civillian ammo. In independent tests i've seen that it simply doesn't function as well (expansion wise). The Ranger Talon is what you want, and i just got some from a guy that has very reasonable prices...sending you an e-mail.

And Ranger Talon is not equal to SXT.

I'm assuming the SXT doesn't live up to the Talon's abilities....?

BTW - Just trying to be sure here.

I'm sending you an e-mail of someone who has served me well in supplying Ranger T's.

Different bullet designs. No talon-forming jacket on the SXT. Also, the Ranger series ammo is tested much more extensively by Winchester than the SXT is.

According to Olin-Winchester public relations, the Supreme SXT bullet design has not been factory tested in standard ordnance gelatin because it was not designed to meet police ammunition performance specifications. As a result, there's no valid and verifiable performance data available from Winchester or the FBI.

The Winchester Ranger Law Enforcement SXT is available as a 127g +P+ 9mm. Winchester restricts the sale of this round to Law Enforcement; but you can find it occasionally. You are not restricted by law from buying it; Winchester just doesn't want to sell it to everybody since they have no control over what "old" 9mm you may fire it in. This stuff is "hot", right up there with the 357sig rounds.

Yes, it feels like you're launching 40's. "Use only in new guns in good condition" isn't just a suggestion. I use it in my Taurus PT92 only because it's built like a freakin' tank. Glock, HK, Sig, Beretta and all the big manufacturers shouldn't have a problem...just use common sence.

From my understanding, the Kahr K9 was built around +P pressures, so I'm under the impression it will withstand the extra bang. I've been using Georgia Arms +P+ ammunition for a while now and my K9 seems to like it, so I'm hoping it will like a this round as well.

I've had occasional luck finding .45 ACP Ranger on gunbroker.com. Seems like there's plenty of 9mm and .40 S&W on there at any given time.

Jerry's the man.

I'm sure ProLoad rocks too, but I've bought alot of Ranger-T ammo from Jerry and he's great to deal with.

I just spoke with John at Proload, a *great* guy, and class act through and through.

I bought many boxes from him, and would encourage others to do so withought hesitation.

PS: also found out he's a Les Bear dealer, and doing some very cool things with their 1911s that no one else currently is.
