The .40 isn't the greatest cartridge in the world. It doesn't
take much of a reloading mistake to blow one up. Get a
.45 and run with the big dogs.

I'll take .45's and 9mm's over .40's all day long. The .40 is expensive around here, puts a lot of wear-and-tear on things, and won't do anything the other two won't.

Fella's;

I've been using and reloading for the .40 since the middle 90's. No problems with reload rounds whatsoever, and thousands of them. It does do something the other's can't, it puts superior capacity on a 9mm frame with the terminal energy levels of the .45. It didn't get to be as popular as it is by being a bad round.

However, the O.P. has the self-defense aspect covered with his current 9mm. Unless there's a desire to shoot a competition that demands the 1911 frame and the ability to make major, it'd seem to me that a revolver larger than the .22 might have a place in his safe.

Start with the idea of a .357 magnum, which can handle heavier bullets than the 9mm, and doesn't spit brass all over the place. There are thousands of used .357's on the market at just about any given time, perfectly good guns at better-than-new prices. Easy to reload for and as versatile as you can get. Or, move up to the 44 magnum. It has much higher energy levels than anything, including the .45ACP, that's been mentioned. However, it also brings increased recoil with those energy levels. It also can be easily handloaded, and is also a very versatile round. Or, go into the territory of the boomer. Hand cannons aren't for everybody, but it you want one, go for it. Again, lots of low-use guns on the market from guys who thought they wanted one, and then about two boxes of ammo later, decided they didn't. Best to go to a range, or tap a friend who has one, and try before you buy.

You have a 9mm so there is no need for the 40S&W. I can see the 45acp fanboys have already weighed in so I will tell you there is no difference in penetration between the three all you do is give up speed with the 45. I know there will be someone who will respond how they can vaporize a elephant with their 45acp @100yds, so I would recommend checking out tn9outdoors on Youtube. He gives honest reviews of ammo and you will see yourself the only difference is bullet weight, speed, and recoil between the three. Good luck in your quest.

No need for a .40 since you already have the 9mm.

But if you're getting a 1911, get a .45!

Agreed. If you're set on a 1911, get the gun in the caliber for which it was designed. A 1911 in any other caliber (except possibly .38 Super) just feels wrong to me.

I think the Glock platform is perfect for .40. Rebarrel to 9mm or .357Sig is easy if wanted.

My Glock 23 has every bit of the power my 1911's have. Ballisticly it seems that .40 is closer to .45 than we give it credit for. Wear has been a complete non-issue.

So I'd recommend next, any of the below:
Glock 23/22/35/19/17/34

Glock 40/41 :D

Dan Wesson Valor
Dan Wesson Specialist
Dan Wesson CCO
CZ 1911
Colt 1991
Colt XSE
Colt Railgun

S&W J Frame

Ruger LCR

Good luck.

You have a 9mm so there is no need for the 40S&W.

really depends on what the OP wants the gun for... i.e. competition where 40SW scores Major and 9mm is Minor(some exceptions)

Sure. I'm operating on the assumption that he would have provided more specific info if the gun were for a narrower purpose.

Booooooooooorrrrrrring. :neener:

Branch out. You can always come back to Glock later if you feel like it after getting acquainted with other platforms.

I gotta agree with AustinTX and look at getting something alittle different. What about a 45acp all steel gun like a 1911?or maybe a CZ 97? If that doesnt float your boat then their is always the 357 magnum(Ruger sp101 or gp100).Just some food for thought.
