What's up fella's I'm looking to purchase a firearm in the next year and I'm want to know if anyone can tell me which is louder a glock 9mm or a glock 40 cal. And if glocks are any louder of quieter than other brands and how safe they are thanks. P.S. Do they jam?

Glocks are very reliable guns. The 9mms especially. As far as noise you would not be able to tell a difference between the noise. They will all cause hearing damage when fired without hearing protection. Not sure why your concerned with noise.

Ignore this. I should've (and will) start a new thread, not reply here. My bad.

A Glock by any other noise, is still a Glock. Sorry, couldn't resist.

Both will be about the same, unless one is ported. The ported being the louder of the two.

Have shot Glock 22C and Glock 17C. Shooting .40 out of a ported barrel is definitely LOUDER than the 9mm. Kind of like a CZ 52, only your ears ring longer.

All guns jam. Some are more well know for their reliability. However I think Glocks are a fine firearm. I would suggest getting the 9mm. It will not be as loud as the .40 in my opinion. It is also cheaper to shoot. Is this your first gun purchase?

You won't notice any difference between the 9's and 40's. You will notice a difference between the compensated and non-compensated models.
If you're inside a vehicle or building when you shoot, I doubt if you'd even notice the difference between compensated and non-compensated (your hearing will though). If in a self defense situation, you definitely won't notice any difference.

Either gun, use sound protection or you will pay for it later in your life.

I've never had a jam or stovepipe in my G17 or G19...but I'm sure it'll happen sometime or another.

Glock 17: 3,000-round, no-clean-torture-test produced 0 failures

I bought it new, cleaned the barrel and added lube (M-Pro 7). I added additional M-Pro 7 every 100 to 150ish rounds, but NEVER cleaned. I fired 3,000 rounds over 5ish months, and never experienced any failures of any sort. Will it fail some day? I am sure it will, and for that very reason I do carry a backup.

My most important consideration for your question and case is, are you experienced with pistols? If no, SKIP THE .40 S&W, go with the 9MM! If you are experienced, either is great.

Regarding noise, it is a mixture, physically, of pressure finally escaping the muzzle, and the bullet "cracking" through the sound barrier. (So it is explained on a video that I purchased). The 9MM and the .40 S&W are very similar in both pressure and velocity, and as such SHOULD produce similar degree of noise. Personally, I always try to wear form inserts in the ear canals AND headphones, which gives me OVER 70 d of noise-reduction. In many cases I can barely even hear people shooting.

As stated already, compensated models (G17C & G22C) are louder than the non-compensated models G17 & G22)! They also produce a marked flash of light in darkness which is not good if this will be your CCW piece. Lots of considerations. Good luck and let us know what you decide. In closing, there a hundreds of indoor, professional ranges that lease pistols by the hour, to fire inside their range (obviously you can't leave with it and return it later). Go try each one out.

I find the 9 to have a sharper report, overall volume is about the same. The 40 is a more comfortable report, but niether are terrible.

Any gun can jam. I have had nothing but problems with 9mm Glocks. I have never had any problems with the larger calibers. My favorite Glocks are the 20 and 36. The recoil on the 40S&W is a bit sharper than a 9mm.
