I have some CFE 223 but can't find what primers to use with it. My thought would be regular small rifle primers and not small rifle magnum primers. This is for .223 in a mini 14.
Your thoughts?
Mini 14s don't kiss primers the way some AR15s do so there isn't a need to use Magnum/Nato type primers. You can still use them, but there isn't a safety reason not to.
My recommendation is if you aready have a box of small rifle primers to give those a try before you buy new ones.
My hunting load for right now is 26.2 gens of CFE223 under a 65gr Sierra Gameking. I have run this load with CCI 400 small rifle and with Wolf SRM (ar15) and have had no ill effects either way.
Of course Win doesn't make a small rifle magnum primer since their standard SR primer is a little on the hot side anyway. Federal and Remington don't either. Whether you'd be better served with a CCI 400 or 450 with CFE223 is difficult to say, but I usually use #41s on the rare occasion that I find myself loading with CCI primers.
ETA: All of Hornady's data for the .223 and 5.56 uses a Win SR primer as well.
