Constitution; that old piece of paper that makes America, America...Can read how some want to do away or modify the 4th, 1st, and 2a, but they might as well change the name while they are at it for it will no longer be the America that many fought and died for.

There is only one "purpose" of gun ownership that is of any importance: protection from the tyranny of government. ALL other purposes, although valid, would be impossible without this.

Unfortunately, I don't think that is completely true. It all depends on how you word the legislation and grant "rights". But in the US, the Bill of Rights states these rights are God given and not granted by the state as in so many other countires.

I chose 'self-defense' because of the way the question was worded...that is why 'my' owning a gun is important to me.

If the question had addressed the 2A (or if I had interpreted it more broadly) I would have chosen "defense against the govt."

Indeed, the Second Amendment was not put into the Constitution by the Founders merely to allow us to intimidate burglars.

This is not to say that defending against personal dangers was not an anticipated use for arms, particularly on the frontier. But these things are not the real purpose of the Amendment.

The right to keep and bear arms derives from our duty to retain the basic means necessary to defend our country and our liberty.

In our defense of Second Amendment rights, we must emphasize the fundamental purpose of the amendment. If we leave the impression that we think that the right to keep and bear arms concerns hunting and sports shooting, thwarting your general street-level criminal, and making sure Americans have the right to entertain themselves with guns, we will actually contribute to the false view that the Second Amendment is a historical curiosity.

In terms of what I see as important for the general gun owner, I'd have to say:

1) Tyrannical Government
2) Self Defense
3) Hunting
4) Recreation
5) Collecting
6) Other

Personally, I don't hunt and I don't want to collect for KISS reasons, so for me personally it ends up being:

1) Self Defense
2) Tyrannical Government
3) Recreation

I voted Tyrannical Government in the poll because its the reason we need the most lenient gun laws possible.

Most of my shooting is done for pure enjoyment--so I voted recreation. I appreciate the SD and 2A aspects, but those are "last resort" situations that I hope to never face.

1) Self Defense
2) Tyrannical Government
3) Recreation

I voted Tyrannical Government in the poll because its the reason we need the most lenient gun laws possible.

Same three for me. See my signature below.

So how many of you would be in favor of a ban on 30rd magazines, or adding semi-autos to the NFA?

How many of you think that the current restrictions on short barreled rifles and shotguns or full auto weapons are a good idea?

Do these sort of bans help or hurt us in the long term if we do need to stop tyranny from becoming widespread?

After the passage of the Patriot Act and the even more heinous National Defense Authorization Act I have to say "Defense against a tyrannical government".

Odd how seeming no one, anywhere, questions why this country is still in a state of emergency after 11 years.:scrutiny:

No way. Just because I don't have a specific need for 30 round magazines it in no way means I would tolerate any effort to ban them. Besides, to me it is clear the tools have never committed a crime sans human.

How about an "all of the above", on your poll?

Seriously, I don't hunt much any more, but every other item on your poll, I am engaged in, and I strongly support. Including hunting.

I have also noticed a disturbing number of post on this forum, that indicate a lack of support for RKBA.:(

1. It is my responsibility as an American citizen to participate in arming myself to guard against potential tyranny from any government from within and abroad.
2. It is my God given responsibility to protect and defend myself and those who can not defend themselves from any evil that may potentially destroy human life.

Simple.
I too, agree with ReelFaith !!

Lateck,

1. Protection against tyranny - most importantly it should be protected for all future generations. We cannot predict what the political climate will be in 10, 20, 50, 100 years, but we damn well can enable our descendants the ability to fight any oppressive government. Just look at the last century - can anyone claim humanity has change so vastly that we are insusceptible to the same mistakes made not more than a handful of decades ago?

2. Personal protection. I firmly believe that every person has a right to protect themselves against aggression towards their person, their family and their possessions. Every criminal has to make a choice to commit an unlawful act, and I believe that when that choice includes bringing harm to others, they have stepped over the line and chosen to possibly pay their life in trade.

3. Hunting. If inclined we should be able to provide for our family by means of hunting.

4. Sporting. Firearms have been a great source of entertainment for generations in my family. They are not tools of evil and when used responsibly can be a great family bonding exercise/hobby as well.

To guard freedom and the safety of the innocent, be it from an individual criminal or any institution or organization that would threaten either.

I voted hunting, but that is just their most common use other than practicing.

In reality I cannot put it above recreation, SD, or any of the others listed outside of collecting (I don't have anything collectible).
