What rifle and scope would you pick for all your Medium to Big Game hunting, in the lower 48 states?

If I ever make it back to Colorado to hunt then my Ruger MKII in 30-06 with Leopold 3x9x40 scope would be my choice. But for whitetail and everything else an older Remington model 7 in 7-08 with 2x7 Leopold scope will do. Like a lot of you I own many guns and I may just hunt with an open sighted 30-30 or a 50 caliber Hawken rifle. My last deer was shot with an open sighted model 94. My newest deer rifle is a wood stocked Savage 243. I ain't particular.

No such thing as a 3x9x40, or a 2x7, etc... It's a 3-9x40, or a 2-7x, etc.

Pre-64 Winchester Model 70, in any of the big-game cartridges they came in.
I have mine. It's a 3-digit (3XX) circa 1936 Mdl 70 30-06 with a USA made Burris 3-9.

My favorite do-it-all rifle is a very light custom FN 98 Supreme '06 in a Pound'r stock with a Timney Sportsman trigger and a 3-9 VariX compact in Weaver mounts. Everything in and on the rifle is there to make it an accurate LW hunting rifle. Loaded with 5 down and one chambered it weighs in 7.5 pounds.

I use a 2.5-8 Loopy VariXIII on my Husqvarna FN 98 9.3X62. IMO, for general big game hunting the VariXIII 2.5-8 is about the best of all choices in a moderate price range.
I've got them on a couple rifles. My M7 .260Rem has an 2.5-8x36 VX3HD with CDS:

and my Rem M7 in .350RM has an older VX3:

IMHO a great all-around scope that doesn't overwhelm the M7 size-wise.

Sadly, the most likely medium-game-sized critters I am likely to encounter on my wife’s family’s land would be poachers/trespassers, who are inclined to use SKS/AK-type rifles. I might find myself being the hunted, so, might have to “hunt back.” So, my ideal “one rifle,” selected from among what I have, might well be an AR15/M4 platform, preferably with a mid-length DMR-ish upper, and, I might want to upgrade to an LPVO, to be named later. This being thick SE Texas woodland, a high-magnification optic is not necessary, so, my modest Leupold M8 2.5x has always seemed adequate. A properly-constructed .223 bullet can take the deer that are in the area, if I need to harvest meat. (I have no desire to collect antlers.)

Well, on second thought, my Benelli M2 shotguns, backed-up by full-sized 1911 or Glock G17 pistols, seem suitable for the poachers/trespassers. I’ll select a Ruger No. 1, chambered for the .45-70, for “game.” Because history. ;) (Yes, I know that a Sharps or Remington Rolling Block would be more historical, but a Ruger No. 1 still seems to be in the spirit of such things, and I wanted to name what I had on hand, rather than what I might buy, someday.)

I’ve been waiting to post on this thread to see if I hit it off with my latest purchase. I’m really digging this Lithgow LA102 in 308 and it would probably be my most practical choice as a general purpose lower 48 hunting rifle. It is topped with a Burris Veracity 2-10x42.

I ordered a 2nd one last night in 6.5CM which I plan to build into a 338 weatherby RPM with the same scope.

Ironically though it probably won’t see a lot of hunting use because I primarily hunt in tamarack sloughs at 100 yards and less and I prefer my big bores for that.

I was at a friends house last week-end and our conversation drifted into how bad the state of affairs is with our current government. One thing led to another and he went into a back room and brought out a FN FAL rifle. I picked it up and at 9.4 pounds it felt like a chunk of scrap metal instead of a rifle. Looking through the scope and feeling how clumsy it was I wondered how anyone could hit anything with it. My current idea of a user friendly rifle is a light mountain rifle with a 22 inch barrel and 3-9 x 40 scope.

FALs are pigs. Scope theyre worse.
They really aren't set up for optics use.
Id love to have an StG58 clone.
The FAL is a soft shooter.
The trigger kinda suck.

Shot pop's Argy at 200 yds. 4" group.
No bag or bipod, just elbows on bench that chewed me up LOL

My complaint with the FAL......

trigger
weight
sights

Guess one can get a Jard trigger.
There's no diet available for an FAL
Sights..........the DSA A2 makes it usable up close, but the front sight is still short n fat.

If I build an StG58 clone, I'll run the reg rear sight but have the aperture opened.
The DSA A2 is a nice sight, but kills the look.

Since the FAL sucks for scope usage, and mags are getting silly priced........
for an easy optic rig, semi auto .308.........the Ruger SFAR seems like itd be the one to get.
However there have been cycling/quality issues.

That boat anchor FAL...........the ones Ive shot, have run flawless. All with metal mags.

Flawless.........kind of an important "feature" for such a rifle.
