Savage in .243 with a spare barrel in .22-250
Savage in .338 wm with a spare barrel in .375r. if there's a budget in play, if NOT: Benelli r1 in .270wsm, .300, and .338 wm,
#2 ar 15 with an upper in .223, .224 valk, and .458 soccom. Technically only 2 firearms either scenario, scenario 2 allows more useable variety without removing scopes and taking extra tools. If I got outside the lines here it's because somehow they got blurry in today's beautiful market!

For Africa the first time in early 80s it was a .300 weatherby MarkV , and a push feed Winchester .458 Win Mag. . I left the .458 Winchester and some ammo with the PH as they were in a bind with the British Embargo , in lieu of a tip. Second time to Africa 2006 or so it was with a Winchester Stainless Ultimate Classic CRF in .270 WSM and a Brown Precision Built 700 Remington Stainless .375 H&H . The .375 H&H got used only once and the .270 WSM killed everything like a lightning bolt !
But since you are talking today, for ME and North American game it is a .243 Mannlicher Schoenauer Carbine , and the same Brown Precision now .375 Weatherby as I used in Africa. If I just get just one gun , its my custom 600 Remington .308 it could do it all and its light and short and hyper accurate. I won't be hunting big bears again.

I've had the idea for years to build a match pair of rifles, like what they would do in Africa. We don't have the big stuff like Africa but still think it would be nice to have two rifle to work with. But a 7mm rem mag would cover every thing here, but two rifles are better one lol. I'll never have The money but thought it would be cool to do a hunting road trip, going state to state and try hunting different animals.

The first rifle would be the most versatile gun, think having the game size cut off around mule deer or smaller black bear game size. But something that could work hunting varmints, like woodchuck or coyote.

Rifle two for bigger black bear, elk, moose, up to big brown bear and bison, even some of the bigger planes game animals like in Texas. The cartridge would have to shoot fairly flat tho, but 400 yards should be plenty for any type of hunting in North America, same for rifle one.

to pick the cartridges the action type used make a big difference, for these I was thinking standard mauser 98 type actions. My choice would be commercial FN's. But m70 type of cz action would be nice to. Both with appropriate scopes, with qd rings and back up sights. stock could be wood or glass/carbon something ambidextrous with a straight comb,

There are a few cartridges I would like for rifle one, it would be hard to pick but many would be great. Here's what I think I I'd use.

Rifle one, 7x57
Rifle two, 375 ruger

what would you pick, I should have done 3 guns because a shotgun would allow more game.

I honestly think you could do anything with the 30.06. The versatility in loads and bullet types makes this round very utilitarian. I do love the .270 win also, but the versatility in loads isn’t quite as good as the 30.06. Both calibers are fairly popular so ammunition availability and costs tend to be fairly reasonable.

Troy, I been thinking, you could go with 1 platform at a fairly reasonable price. I'll allow that it's not easy on the eyes, but ergonomics are supposed to be phenomenal, and it's hard to beat the modularity:

Eta that barrel and bolt swapping is nice and you could keep one set for either .223 bolt or 08 family, then the spare set to magnum and swap barrels per task.

Ya I was going to mention the t/c, I just thought a 2 gun set would be more traditional. Luckily we in the U.S. Are not limited to the 2 gun rule like in Africa like I mentioned.

I have not shot the t/t or handled one, I'm sure they shoot good but they know how to make a ugly gun, which could be looked over if usfull.

Or take the 7-08 barrel ream it to .280ai, and throw in the .30-06 bolt........ Now what!?

I like stickers lol. I know a guy who makes them. He was the guy that did the lettering for the truck shop I worked in. He would make all kinds of funny sticker.

I should give him a visit one day and see what he is up to.

Yes, the barrel on my dads commercial FN 280ai was a 7-08 barrel.

If the 1st rifle absolutely has to deal with mule deer size game my combo would be either CRF Winchester M 70's or CZ 550's in 6.5x55 and 375 H&H both topped with Trijicon AccuPoint 2.5-12.5x42 scopes. If I can limit the 1st rifle to whitetails then I would change it to a CZ 527 in 223 with the same scope.

How bout 25-20 and the old 06. Can do small 4 legged with 25-20 and load light to heavy in the 06 for antelope to moose.
