What rifle caliber compares to 12ga 00 buckshot recoil?

My only long gun experience is with .22, .223 and 12ga shot gun. The 12ga. is obviously much greater in the recoil aspect but at what caliber do rifles reach the same recoil?

I have no problem handling the 12ga. recoil so that is not my concern just mostly curious as to what to expect when increasing my long gun collection.

Depeneding on the amount of shot you are looking at something around .300mag or even .338mag. 12 ga with 1 oz shot is about 27ft-lbs and with 1.5 oz shot about 43. A .308 is maybe 17 and a .223 under 4 ft-lbs.

Keep in mind though that the slight flinch that comes with heavy recoil in a rifle is not an issue with a shotgun.

While one can compare recoil energies of certain rounds, the felt recoil also depends on the weight of the rifle. For instance lets say a .50 BMG firing rifle is heavy enough, then it might kick less than a 12 gage Remington 870.

The figures I used above were calculations that incorporated the weight of the gun, in all cases average weight for that kind of gun. But I totally agree there is another dimension of recoil that is subjective. For one thing, who shoots a 12ga shotgun with 00 shot from a bench? Shotguns tend to be shot from standing positions where the body is better able to flow with the recoil but I think rifles tend to be fired from positions that force the body to absorb more recoil. I guess that's why the same people who can shoot a 12ga without much thought to recoil would "recoil" from the recoil of a .338mag

For some reason, to me, .30/06 rifle recoil always feels heavier than 12 ga shotgun recoil. I dont know why.

Are you standing when shooting the 12ga and sitting with the 30/06? That seems to make a big difference for me.

Id have to say that shooting my 700pss 300 winmag w/ 200gr. rounds is pretty much in line with 3" buck in my 12ga. But the difference is the 300winmag has a sharp snappy recoil where the 12 ga is more like a quick hard shove, but the energy felt is equal if you get my drift.
