I'm not looking for a heated debate over which choice is better, This is merely what type of rifle you keep to defend you and your family.

I keep a WASR 10/63 UF with a us palm battle grip, a warsaw sling, three prong flash suppressor, a ultimak m2-b and a bushnell trs-25.

Good out to 400 yds at a sillouhette. Holds 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches at 100 yds. I have about 5,000 rounds through without any malfunctions or issues with zero.

Saiga-12 above my bed with 20 round drum... AMD-65 in closet for SHTF... Golani with 35 round mag in living room, mossberg 500 in office... Taurus 40 cal in Kitchen, multiple AKs upstairs... and G23 on me at almost all times... I think I'm covered... but, I plan on getting more just in case I'm not... :)

I have never felt the need to keep a rifle for HD.

HD is close, a rifle is for distance. Here in FL, you will go to jail if you participate in long distance "HD" using a rifle

Some folks are way too paranoid about life in general

mini-14, nikon 1-4 .223 scope, 30rnd factory mag, 40grn p-dog poppers, and high output flash light. This is also my favorite range toy, it get shot the most of any of my centerfires. Accuracy runs 1.5-2" with any decent ammo, and Im comfortable on bowling pins and pop cans at 250yds from any position except standing.

Honestly I dont ever expect to use it for home defense, nothing i own is worth killing some one over. They would have to present a threat to either myself or my family, and besides, this is hawaii...one of these days i may take to locking my doors, or putting up the windows on my car...just dont drive a toyota truck or a civic LOL

Rossi model '92 trapper carbine in .357 plus my old gen 2 glock 19.

The Rossi doubles as my 'farmyard varmint' gun, loaded with light .38 specials.

I keep the clip for my Ruger GSR loaded up. If i have to defend the home from beasts or goblins I would not care to be on the other end of me and a rifle. Especially with 10rnds of .308 on my side.

I live in the city so a rifle isn't my first choice for home defense. I keep a Winchester 1300 Home Defender 12ga for H.D. I keep my AK in the safe with 4 30 rnd mags handy.

A stock Mini-14 carbine (with the factory peep-sight) for "close" range and a Rock River National Match (NM A4) AR-15 with a 3X9 Burris scope (equipped with an auxiliary Yankee Hill Machine Company, Inc. peep-sight) for long range (in the unlikely event that I need to dispatch a two-legged varmint at a distance as opposed to its usual role of shooting far-away four-legged varmints-usually 'chucks).

I have tons of rifles but I would not pick any rifles for self defense to protect my family....

For this, you need a shotgun or pistol

My 870 is my primary, loaded with #4 buck. My M-1 Carbine is my backup and my wife's primary. I also have ARs and an SKS that will do the job perfectly well.

I never pick up a pistol at all if I have time to get a long gun instead. Pistols are best for one thing only. Convenience. If you think a rifle or carbine can't be used for close defense, you need to learn how to do it correctly.

For a close range HD scenario, either my G19 with the Streamlight on the night stand or the Remington 870 with the Streamlight and #4 Buckshot hanging inside the bedroom closet above the door. I have a BCM middy with an Aimpoint and Surefire X300 in the safe, but if I ever really need that to protect myself then <deleted> has really hit the fan.

Winchester 320 .22 LR loaded with some good quality hollow points by my nightstand at night (in closet during the day), Stevens 200 .223 with some Hornady VMax HP 40 grain in the closet. Both are home defense guns second and range guns first, I know they aren't ideal but with my budget they'll have to do until my new (to me) shotgun that I inherited arrives. If the defecation really hits the oscillation (SHTF) I'm confident the Stevens 200 will be able to handle covering the drive up to my house, which any looter/zombie would have to make it down to get to me in the 3rd floor window. My friend has Remington 1100 12 Gauge shotgun and he lives close, we've agreed that my home, which is larger and is more naturally defensible due to its environment would be his BOL in such a scenario.

@Sergei Mosin A rifle is a lot better in Suburbia than in a fully urban area that's for sure.

I think people misunderstood my post I meant for personal defense, home defense would be a portion of it but also as a trunk, outdoorsy etc personal defense. There are plenty of area's where a rifle would suit better for, this is not just limited to home.

camp guns = 12 ga. and 338WinMag
Home guns = 12 ga. pump, XD40
Truck gun = AR10 or the old M1 Carbine
CCW = Why tell? It would not be CCW. The unknown factor is your best friend. IMHO

AR-15 with Hornady TAP FPD or Black Hills Mk 262 Mod 1 currently. I'd feel comfortable with any reliable rifle I'm proficient with, and have ammo properly selected for the task.

What prevents you from using a rifle at short ranges too?

Why would you choose a pistol over a rifle?

If you're defending yourself with any firearm then the excrement has hit the fan. Why would you advocate a pistol over a rifle to save your hide?
Here in suburbia, a rifle is wildly inappropriate for HD.
What leads you to write that?

This subject has been discussed at length here, so much so that the mods stickied one particularly good thread on the topic:

If I reached for a rifle to use in defense.. I'd reach for my Colt 6920. Unless I was defending myself from a rhino. I have a .375 H&H for that.. and the rhinos must know it as they stay FAR away from me.

In all seriousness I've shot my Colt in a lot of competitions and I can make shots out to 400-425 yards. I use Prvi 55gr FMJ for most of my shooting but I also keep some 62 gr green tip penetrator ammo on hand. I keep a loaded magazine of 55gr Winchester soft points in my safe with my rifle.

A lot of the time, I keep my SKS in my truck. I can't do it always, because I go on and off military posts a lot. My lifestyle is such that I might decide at any time to run out to the desert to shoot something. My SKS is a great rifle to rattle around in the back of the truck, buys cheap, shoots cheap, and not so pricey if it got 'held' by an LEO who doesn't know the law, I would be heartbroken or have a hard time replacing it. I can throw it across the handlebars of the ATV, and if I had to fight with it, anywhere, it is certainly up to the job.
