A local gun store (Kittery Trading Post) is having a sale, and there's one of these:
Sportster for about $110.
The price is right, it feels good when I shoulder it, and I like the idea of having a single shot to develop shooting skill.

It has no iron sights, so when (IF!) I buy it I'll need a scope & mount.
Mounts: How much do mounts really matter? Should I just get something cheap?
I have no idea what scope to get. I want to spend around $200 total, so that puts a pretty strong restriction on scopes. Plus I can upgrade later. Any good scopes for under $70?

Thanks,

Owen

Natchez always has a few scopes on sale for that kinda money, make sure it is either made for rimfires, or has an adjustable objective.

Like This One.

I've got the Bushnell Sportsman 3-9x32 scope, which is a fine scope, but does get int the way a little with the bolt throuw on the ruger 77/22.

If you can spend a little more than $200 total, look at the Weaver 4x28mm rimfire scope. They go for about $100 from places like SWFA or Natchez. Very good optics and reliable, repeatable clicks. For about $120 you can get Weaver's 2-7x28mm variable power rimfire scope.

Nikon makes rimfire scopes comparable in price to the Weavers.

For a mount just use a Weaver mount and rings. They are cheap and durable.

Get a scope that is designed for a rimfire. (parallax free at 50m)

I have a fixed 4 power scope on my cz452, which is zeroed at 50m. That is fine for my needs - ie plinking, shooting rabbits and shooting 25m and 50m matches at the range. If you are planning on doing benchrest then you'd need a higher power. Seems that most people prefer variable power scopes - but a fixed power makes sense to me. I figure that I can always change the scope later if I change my mind.

I have a Leopold 2x7 rimfire scope on my CZ 452, and a Weaver 2x7 rimfire scope on my heavy barreled 10/22. The Weaver costs half as much at about $120 and there doesn't seem to be much difference in optics.

In my opinion you cant beat a simmons, both of my 22's wear simmons 22 mag 3x9x32. And the the best part is the $40.00 price tag and the clear optics, also paralex free at 50 yds.

My own opinion, I don't take to little bitty .22cal scopes because you can't see as much through them as through one designed for a high power rifle. Simmons 4x32 works quite well as does Simmons 3-9x32.

I bought three Bushnell Sportview 3X12 scopes for $39.99 each back when they were on sale at riflescopes.com among a couple other places. They also have a focus. One I even put on a Mini-14. I had no problems with the scope, but ended up selling the gun with the scope still attached. I have one on my 10/22 and it is nice and clear and works wonderfully. Used it alot today again.
