I recently bought a sig p220 sao w/elite(beavertail)frame/Tritium sights, in the carry size from BassPro. Brand new @ $720. I couldn't pass it up. Needless to say I am very happy with it and I already shoot it as well as my Glock or XDs. I'd say check it it out if you are comfortable with cocked and locked carry.
Personally, I'm a "1911 guy." But, in 9mm, have you seen a Sig P-250? Ist's their new "convertible. Buy a couple more "add-ons" and you can have a 40 or 45 also. Last price I saw was about $650.
My first thought was a 1911. I have one already but would definitely buy another.
As for carry, well, I carried my commander length 1911 in an IWB holster through a couple stores last night. I put very thin grips on it and that solved the "grip being twice as thick as the rest of the gun" problem.
It really depends on how you're dressed. When I have a jacket on, concealing my 1911 is no problem. Summer is a different matter.
And that's why, upon reflection, I would probably spend the money on one of those new Kahr 380's. I've been looking around for an LCP too. My Guardian .380 would like some company. You can never have too many pocket pistols.
(flame suit on) Not everybody wants/needs a 1911 for a shooter that doubles as a carry gun. If I were to recommend a 1911-style gun, it'd be that little Para Warthog or whatever. That thing is much smaller in person, and still maintains great capacity!
That being said, get a Sig variant. I'm loving my P228 with Lasergrips. LOVING IT.
DW CBOB, no zinc, no aluminum, no plastic. Designed for carry. CBOB's are available for $750 as cosmetically flawed guns, though people who have bought the "flawed" guns can't find the flaws!
Now, there is a gun that you can proudly hand down to your kid someday.
