Today was my second day of orientation at my new job. The first thing they did was pass out a sheet of paper asking questions about us, what we like to do, etc. to get to know us better.

Three of the questions were: "What are your hobbies?" "What do you like to do?" and "What is your favorite sport?" The answers to all of them were either "shooting" or "guns," but I decided not to put anything gun-related on there. You know what? I had the damnedest time thinking of anything to put down there.

I'm not a one-sided person, but compared to my love of shooting, everything else is just inconsequential. I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't own guns.

Thank heaven for the RKBA!

I was way ahead of you there Wes, as I was reading! LOL....

''Shooting, ''shooting'' and ''guns'' - oh my - how nice it'd be to not have to think ''PC thoughts'' just in case. Sadly tho these days, you just never know. It'd only take ''one of them upstairs'' to get a horror reaction to such entries and ''poof'' might go your job chances.

OTOH ... you may even be so lucky as to have a gun friendly boss - but who knows! That would be a bonus but hard to find out at this stage.

So - what DID you put down? I guess it'd be pretty safe to enter ''Photography'', ''take photo's'', and ''take photo's''! :p

Well - it's ''shootin'' - ain't it?! Well sorta! :)

Good luck with the new venture ... hope those feet hold up and are ''bedding in'' better.

heh. Had the exact same thing happen to me a few years back. The only other thing I could think of was 'band', since I'm a hack trumpet player. So I put that down, and every time the talk about hobbies started, I thought "guns" but talked "band". They decided I was gay. Really. :uhoh:

I am glad I have been a police officer for these past 15 + years. I also would have to say shooting and guns.

The gun culture?

We all share an interest in guns around these parts. When you refer to this interest as the gun culture, it starts to sound like some sort of splinter group--tends to isolate us. Most of us still play well with others, and enjoy being a part of the big picture.

The term culture has picked up a pejorative flavor of late--witness the drug culture or goth culture. So we try to seem well rounded and it's probably not a bad idea to diversify a little bit. Yup, shooting is fine fun but there may come a day when you can't, due to physical condition or other misfortune. Photography uses many of the same skills, bicycling will help maintain physical ability, and getting out on the water to fish or just float helps to kick those endorphin levels up too.

One of the better things about getting old is that you can just state the facts and let the chips fall where they may. The opinions of H.R. types no longer matter.
Amen!

My first boss in my previous job was a cowboy action shooter.

One year, the company wanted every group to put on a team-building event outside of work hours on the company dime. He had me arrange a group shoot at the local range. He brought 8 or 9 guns, I brought 5. A couple other people brought 1 or 2. We shot for a couple hours, then went out to lunch - also on the company dime.

And I got to keep all the brass. :neener:

I work in "Dilbertville". Most there are even horified that I hunt and occasionally bring venison chili to a "pot luck". I suppose that if someone wanted to check on my interests, all they would have to do is have IS look at my internet activity first thing in the morning and at lunch. Twice daily trips to THR and TFL.

Thefumegator, I just noticed you location says "Where the mustard goes." Do you work at the depot?

No, but I live close. :)

I suppose you're right, but that's not at all how I meant it... I just meant "all things shooting."
