For coyote hunting it is very hard to beat 55 grain Hornady V-Max or Nosler Ballistic-Tip bullets.

They are extremely accurate, and designed to get inside a varmint & explode.
That results in a DRT coyote that won't run off and die in the brush where you can't find it. They are also very frangible if you miss and they hit the ground, so they won't ricochet into the next farm like FMJ bullets can possibly do.

Wolf may make a decent HP hunting load, I don't know.
But the FMJ military type stuff commonly sold is a crippler and should not be used for hunting.

Ok blinky, on my AR I have quad rails, a foregrip, a flashlight and a red dot sight so it is leaning towards the tactical side. This is because it is used on the ranch where we have been having problems with feral dogs and it is used as a protection gun. I have also used it for hunting coyotes out to about 250 yards, I just take off the foregrip and add a bipod.

My specs are a 16" M4 profile barrel and a 1 in 9" twist rate.

You can have both, but IMO if you want a "dedicated" coyote rifle (capable of consistent shots out to about 350 yards or so) you might want to look into a longer barreled upper.

But your DPMS can most definitely pull double duty.

I have shot many different types of ammo, but surprisingly my rifle likes Herters 62 gr HPs. It is steel cased (like the Wolf) and VERY cheap. The other type of ammo I use is Hornady TAP 55 gr. <- Great ammo, just a little pricey.

Just try some different ammo and see what your gun (and your wallet) likes.

Blinky,
I've think any style AR rifle (tactical or varmint) set up is easily capable of rendering a coyote DRT out to 300 yards. It's very easy to put together a very versatile AR system or you can build a AR for a very specific use - tactical or varmint or hunter.

When I decided to build my own AR - I wanted an "All-around" use carbine, so I put together: A2 upper, 16" heavy barrel w/flash hider, m4 handguard(w/heat shield), 6 position adjustable stock - can mount scope on the carry handle.
If I were doing it all over again - I'd probably use an A3 flat top (for better/easier scope mounting), flip-up front and rear BUIS (Back Up Iron Sights), same barrel, free float aluminum handguard.
Either way, I'd feel perfectly comfortable with either set-up if I had coyotes in the "back 40" or if it was "sappers in the wire".

If you want

Make your AR for Varmint and all around use. You will enjoy it more and get your money's worth. Get some rings that are detachable and keep your zero. Throw a 4-12 scope on it and go hunting.

As for people hunting, AK-47.
