Here is A. G. Russell's list of currently available slipjoints. I'd recommend a Schatt & Morgan File & Wire Tested knife, myself. Very collectible, high quality, and not a brand that you have listed as owning.

wow. lots of suggestions. some i have thought about before and some are completely new ideas. thanks! i've made the purchase already, but keep em coming. i may get the new knife itch again. i am very interested in the Queen Cutlery mini trapper in D2 and honey amber stag, Case's mini trapper in yellow handle and CV blades, the buck 112, and some of the spyderco suggestions. the tenacious, endura, and native all are appealing to me. (i've had a native, great knife. lost it while fighting a house fire)

sm,

who makes the custom slipjoints you were talking about? this really interests me. thank you.

If you don't have any large fixed blades, I would get at least one. A good machete, a large quality bowie, a HI (15-18") kukri, or- at one time the obvious bargain- a surplus large "sword" bayonet. You may still be able to find one inexpensively, but I understand they've gone up in price in recent years.

How fun it is, to spend md7's money...

<whups! Did I type that?>
*grin*

So while hso comes up with more customs...
JShirley comes up with more fixed blades...
JTW does his thing...
Arfin drools over what he is seeing being shared...

The rest of us, will toss out knives such as:

Buck 500 series
Krein Dogfish
Becker Necker
Moore Maker
Shrade Old Timer ( from years gone by)

How about a Betram era Hen & Rooster?

*this-is-fun*

hahaha!

sm,

i wish i had more discretionary income than i do my friend. usually, i am quite frugal (by necessity) but i have got a little extra cash to spend right now, and haven't "splurged" in a while(the sole exception of the stockman). i guess i'm doin my part to "stimulate the economy" as it were! thank you for the suggestions.

hso,

thank you for the links to todd davison's knives. they are quite nice. i would have to feed the piggy bank for a long time for a knife like that! good to know none the less.

jshirley,

have not ever considered the kukri before. interesting. i do have a good ole machete that is well used from years of cutting hedges and limbs to get to the deer stand. thanks!

this thread is exactly what i had in mind. everybody looks at a collection and approaches it from a different angle. some of these suggestions are of knives i have never seen nor heard of. had i not posed a question, i might never have. fixed blades, folders, slipjoints, new, old, traditional, innovative. they all have a place. it's interesting to me to see everyone's tastes and preferences. and for relatively unknowlegable knife guys, like myself, this thread is very informative. Thank you all for the input!

hso, and sm,

the becker necker looks awesome! that would make a pretty good camp/woods knife. small, light, easily accesible, and quick out.

I find that when I use a kukri to cut brush, my arms doesn't feel as fatigued as I would do with an axe or a machete.

Have you ever considered the benchmade 943? It is a beautiful edc folder, albeit a bit on the expensive side.

A Buck 119 Special, a classic US-made 6" fb available from WallyWorlds, etc, for <$40, is a classic. In the same price range, or less, falls the traditional German-made Boker Tree Brand classics - Barlows, Congress, Stockman, etc. They can often be 'won' on evil-bay for half of list price. Outstanding German carbon steel - delivered sharp - classic whittling knives. Of course, the ALOX Victorinox SAKs, Farmer, Soldier, etc, are great additions, too.

haven't checked this in a while. well, my knife purchases have been made now. in time there will be more, but it will likely be a while.

i addded the bk11 "becker necker" per the suggestion of sm and hso. thanks by the way. i never knew how much i would enjoy edc'ing a small fixed blade. used the neck cord to wrap the handle and rig up the sheath for belt carry. the handle feels really nice with the wrapping.

also got a spyderco centofante III. got em both while taking a trip through tennessee at the smokey mt. knife works store. that place is huge by the way.

i think i will save the next purchase for christmas. it will be the becker bk7. the esee rc5 and izula also look interesting but i like the bk7 a bit more.

thanks for all the replies!

also, a friend of mine picked up a buck paklite skinner the other day for $20.00 or so! that is a really nice little blade!

anybody got one? i thought it was a nice knife and at a very good price.

oh well, another one to put on the "wish list".

When it comes to traditional knives, I am a big fan of the Trapper. I prefer the Case Mini-Trapper as I find it rides a little easier in my pocket than the regular Trapper and is more substantial than the Tiny Trapper. I recommend them whole-heartedly.

To be even more specific, if you can find one of the Case Wharncliffe Trappers, get it. I have one and plan on buying another. It's hard for me to explain why I like the wharncliffe over the spey, but at the end of the day, I just like it much, much better. I find it more generally useful in day to day tasks, though I do like the spey for certain applications, like skinning.

As far as the Pak-lite goes, I have one sitting right here in front of me. I think they are a fabulous bargain and again, I recommend them as a nice, decently sized fixed blade knife that won't be seeing tactical duty. As a survival knife? I prefer my Becker Necker, and it's entirely because of the steel. Carbon steel is simply a better "survival" steel than the 420 that the paklite is made of in that it is easier to sharpen. Maintenance might be a little higher with the carbon steel, but even I can put an edge on it pretty easily, which is saying a lot.

im a fan of trappers also timbo.

particularly with the carbon blades. got my first one almost two years ago i think. skinned more than a few deer with it last year too. the blades have a nice look to em now.

mini trappers are cool too.

Check out Blind Horse Knives.

Blind Horse may be the best bargain out there these days. Small shop operation, careful heat treat, ridiculously low prices for what you get. Nice folks also.

Hard to pass by that exit on I-40 without a short trip down to Smokey Mt Knife Works (or over to Bass Pro). I did just that last week and $150 later walked out with a few kitchen knives (my wife destroys kitchen knives regularly prying things), couple new SAKS, and a limited edition Case in the Trapper pattern. I just like Trappers.

22-rimfire,

that was my first experience with them. honestly, it's almost overwhelming! in a good way. i have NEVER been to a knife store that resembles anything close to that. i was like a kid in a candy store. it helps to know what you want before you go in there i guess (which i did).

next trip up that way, i'll definitely stop back in.

sm,

another excellent suggestion. also another one that is going to have to go on the wish list. the Douk -Douk looks awesome, has carbon steel, and is rich in history. i can get into that. inexpensive to boot!

Md7, I get lost (sort of) every time I go to Smokey Mt Knife Works. They ask which register and I point.... sometimes pointing to the wrong end of the store. Sure is fun to browse around if you have an hour or so to kill.

Picked up this little snipper (scissor thing-$5) that I hope to use to cut leader fishing. Totally different kind of experience from finger nail clipper type cutter.

Had the opportunity to look closely at Blackjack knives there. Thinking about adding one to me accumulation for fun. It will probably be something along this line. http://newgraham.com/store/product/2951/Blackjack-Model-5-Stag-BJ-BCB5S/

As you probably noticed, there are less expensive places to buy knives.

md7,

You should have gone through the Knife Collectors Society museum. That would have blown your mind.

You should make a point of coming to the Youth HammerIn riverside at SMKW.
