I was at the range yesterday and in the middle of the magazine the slide was locking back after every shot. I took the slide off and saw theat the slide release was sticking up. So I took out the trigger assembly and gave it a quick cleaning. Then played with the spring on the side lock a bit and put it all back together. No problems now fired 200 more rounds with no issues. My dad bought the gun in 1994 and has shot I don't how many rounds through it before he gave it to me. As far as I know this is the first issue to occur. Should I just get a new slide release?

No, I think it isn't necessary. I've seen the same thing happened at the range: the owner disassembled the gun for cleaning the day before and riassembled the slide stop spring incorrectly; he then pushed out the pins above the trigger, re-installed the spring in the correct position and the Glock was ready again for the rest of the session.
Now, if you are feeling the spring is a little weak change it; to see if it's weak, remove the slide and with no magazine in place, push the slide stop lever up: it should return down with enought force and a good click against the plastic frame.

Ditto: The slide stop spring was incorrectly installed above the locking block pin, rather than below it.

Just to clarify, if the pin had been out just prior to the malfunction, it was very likely the spring position on reinstall. If the pin has NOT been removed recently (prior to the malfunction) I would replace the assembly as they are inexpensive. They also make a factory extended release as well if you are so inclined.

The slide stop lever and spring are not very expensive. I'd just replace them both and then not worry about it.

If I saw that the spring leg was incorrectly placed, and I corrected that, why would I worry?

a teardrop/extended slip stop release (they usually come with a new spring) from lone wolf or other quality aftermarket makers is dirt cheap and a nice upgrade for usability.

with the original being circa 1994, i would just spend the $15 and get a new spring and extended slide stop. won't hurt anything and will alleviate any future possible issues with an old and weakened spring.
