DETROIT, Michigan (AP) -- A woman who found a shotgun while cleaning her home Sunday accidentally fired the weapon as she tried to determine whether it was loaded, killing a 1-year-old girl, police said.

The woman found the gun under a couch while cleaning the house where she lived with the child and the child's mother, police said.

The woman told investigators she wanted to see if the gun was loaded, so she operated a slide on the gun that dropped a round into the firing chamber. But her finger was on the trigger, and the gun went off.

"Right now we really don't know what happened, but her finger was on the trigger," Sgt. Eren Stephens said. "At this time, it seems more of a careless handling of the gun."

It was not clear who owned the gun. The woman, 46, was not identified.

Police were questioning the woman, and results of the investigation were to be forwarded to prosecutors for review, Stephens said.

I will never understand exactly what is going through the head of a person who thinks it's a good idea to point the dangerous end of a firearm at a child while they try to figure out how to unload it. Even if you don't know the first thing about guns, I would think it to be common-*blanking*-sense not to point the barrel at an infant while you fiddle with it! :banghead:

VPC gets another statistic, more people may well be swayed by reading about another baby killed by those evil, evil guns, and worst of all, this child has lost her life because one woman had the common sense of a retarded ant. :(

sad... too bad a kid had to die....

She should have done the world a favor and taken herself out.....

sigh

Yeah...I thought the proper way to check to see if a gun was loaded was to look down the barrel while pulling the trigger. :banghead:

Too bad there's no law against stupidity.

You gotta wonder, that for each infant shot in such a scenario, how many guns are pointed in their direction with an empty chamber that we never hear about?:uhoh:

You're assuming it really was an accidental shooting. Whay kind of mother would accidentally point any weapon at her child? I'm sure the police have already considered the possibility that it really was murder.

If I read the story correctly, it wasn't her kid, it was her roomate's kid. Felony stupidity aside, maybe she didn't like the kid:uhoh:

That may be a bit harsh. Those not versed in firearms, usually have no concept of the 4 rules, or any safety for that matter.

tragic effect of ignorance and stupidity combined

Bad communication in the house. The gun-owning roommate stored a loaded gun in a public area without letting the non-gun-familiar one know it was there. The latter found the thing and acted with more curiosity than good sense.

This is why basic gun handling should be taught in schools. No one ought to be in a position to find a gun and not know how to be safe with it. Time to quit fetishizing guns and treat them as the tools/machines (and sports equipment) they are.

I don't know about the law where this stupid woman lives, but in PRK the owner of the gun would probably be charged with something and the stupid trigger puller get off with no charges.
After all, "if the owner of the gun had locked the gun up, this would not have happened." This is the mind-set here by the law officials.:cuss:

Darwin got his ass kicked on this one.

Negative. The whole point of the "Darwin Awards" is laughing at people who harm or kill themselves through some combination of stupidity and ignorance. In this case, the casualty was a 1-year old child. Are you saying the child brought his/her death on himself through ignorance or stupidity?

Without sufficient background, I can't blame the mother. The blame should rest firmly upon the shoulders of the woman who was cleaning. She stored it without a round in the chamber as a precaution and her friend was just careless. It's pretty well known that the trigger is what makes a weapon fire. Furthermore, she had to find the slide lock and chamber a shell. All this while pointing the weapon at the mother's child. So she either knew the basics of the weapon or she'd been handling the gun for at least a couple minutes.

This reeks of being intentional while using the accident defense to avoid prosecution.

I also agree with nualle about gun education in school. If children went through an Eddie Eagle type program, the few accidents that do occur would be greatly reduced. What happened to hunters safety classes? I remember going through that in school right after boaters safety and I'm just a youngin' (22).

I think he means what you mean. Darwin lost. We all lost.

If she would have simply put the "unloaded" shotgun away, no harm done.

She chose, instead, to manipulate a tool of which she apparently has no knowledge. Or did she?

While gun safety education is good, unless you live under a rock and do not watch TV, no one can claim that racking the slide makes a gun safer, or that pulling the trigger makes it safer. :(

Why is everyone getting upset?

You all seem to think that most of the world holds some kind of intelligence.

I hate to tell ya but the intelligent people are and will always be out numbered by the people just breathing my air away.

I refuse to shorten my life by rasing the blood pressure when things like this happen every day. I expect it and am surprised when it doesn't happen.

This is the kind of crap we get in a society that demonizes simple tools.

Many people would never consider owning arms because they buy the notion that gun owners are "bad" or "nutjobs" therefore they never learn how to safely handle one ... and they don't teach their children to safely handle one.

This is how the antis are working it ... make it difficult and/or socially unacceptable to own guns and less people will learn how to use them properly then more people will do stupid crap like this and you have even more excuse to make gun ownership difficult and/or socially unacceptable.

Harsh? Hmmm, how about:
  • STOP!
  • Don't touch!
  • Leave the area!
  • Tell an adult!

Ya' gotta wonder a lot about any "adult" who still exhibits an, "Oh my God there's a chainsaw… nuclear weapon… laser… band saw… wood chipper… machinery… gun that is sitting there harming no one - let me fiddle with it and see if I can make it 'safe'," mentality. ["Hmmm, what that red button marked 'ARM" for anyway??"]

Anyone who makes it to "adulthood" at least ought to know that inanimate objects tend to remain inanimate, unless acted on by an external force.

[added] My 11-yo daughter can clear, field-strip, reassemble, and reload a 1911 - and this "adult" can't not touch a shotgun??

Dex }:>=-

I think the best part is that the gun was unloaded until she touched it. Sounds a little fishy to me...

So from childhood on,we can manage to teach people to look bothways before crossing, but I personally don't recall anyone (before I was actually shoting) ever mentioning firearms. If the anti-gunners would put half the effort into eduating people that they do in telling us how evil guns are, tragedies due to, what should be common sense, could be avoided.

Right now, a huge percentage of America has learned what it 'knows' about guns from TV and movies.
