what to carry running

I know that feel....

What did you finally go with? I'm dealing with the same problem training for a 50K. Even in the winter I'm soaked through with sweat by the time I get in. I don't want to add 5 gun cleanings a week to my training routine. I've been using a belly band (pistol wear) with a Ruger LCP inside a pocket holster, inside the belly band pocket. It's comfortable enough and accessible with a bit of practice and dry fire, but it's not practical since the pistol has been sitting in a damp holster - possibly for over an hour by the time I finish. Lots of animals in my area and I'm often running early/late in the dark so I definitely want to carry. I don't really need another subcompact so I'd rather get a decent holster that stays dry on the inside than invest in a stainless subcompact.

Old thread, but I'll throw in another vote for a Smith & Wesson J-Frame snubbie like the 637, 638, or 642. I'm especially fond of the 637-2 Wyatt Deep Cover.

Since I missed this the first time, and since we have a new runner asking, I'll chime in. I'm not a runner, but I do exercise, and being a fat kid in Georgia I sweat like crazy in the summer. The Kel-Tec P3AT and its Ruger clone the LCP are two of the lightest handguns available in a decent cartridge. A couple of summers ago I finally got a Kel-Tec P3AT with a hard chrome slide, and it's been spectacular. If you want light weight and extreme corrosion resistance a hard chrome P3AT is very hard to beat.

My exercise is walking, mainly in local parks and on some rather long trails and my carry is a 638 mainly for it's size and the fact that being a revolver, it can come into play easier and quicker.

Since I first learned of the discovery of the wheel, I just haven't been motivated to do any running!

I do, however, bicycle and carry a G26 in a holster that's attached to the bike's frame.

I went on a group ride with a guy who carried exactly like that. The rest of the pack thought it was the funniest thing ever, and every time a car was insufficiently courteous, the cry went up, "Donnie get your gun! Deal with that <>>+=$*¥<!"

if you can't run with your EDC, you need to get a different EDC setup. If you will degrease the gun, use dry graphite on the high-friction areas and 2 coats of car wax on the exterior, a kydex pocket rig (with tapered, rounded corners and padded backing) you will be just fine.

Try this

Put the pistol in a cheap sandwich bag, I'm betting you can stick your finger through the bag at the trigger guard when you need it.

maybe

if you also put some moisture absorber in there, without it interfering with the gun. . Cause what happens is the moisture-laden air condenses inside of the bag, onto your gun.

It amounts to blasphemy on this board, but consider not carrying a gun during your runs. Instead, think about one of the hollow-metal, takedown walking sticks. They "shake out' to reassemble in seconds, and are plenty for use vs a dog, or most men. Just tie on a cord and sling it over your shoulder.

I nominate this for statement of the month, possibly the winter, maybe the year! LOVE IT! :D (My girlfriend is a runner and I am a cyclist running 5ks to stay in shape over the winter.)

As for carrying while running/jogging, my first thoughts are the Kel-Tecs, P-32 and 3AT, in hard-chrome. They're small, they're flat and they're lightweight. One should fit the bill quite nicely. Anything much bigger is going to A) be pretty obvious in running gear, B) be too heavy to stay put while you move with any speed and C) potentially get in your way while moving. I know I'd personally find anything shifting around to be incredibly annoying, to the point where the exercise would be cut short so I'd go home, ditch the offending object and then go without it next time.

Now on a bike, when I'm kitted up in Lycra and hammering, the only thing that might work is one of the little guns in a wallet/pocket holster in a jersey pocket. With many rides taking me into gun unfriendly Massachusetts, I've never even bothered look into this as a viable option. Besides, when I'm out in traffic I'm more worried about getting clobbered by somebody texting, eating, doing makeup or putting their children back in the car seat... :scrutiny:

I know you're trying to help, but that's a really bad idea. There's too much risk of trigger entanglement, and it makes the gun more difficult to grip.

Finishes like hard chrome, electroless nickel, and modern polymer & ceramic coatings (CeraKote, Duracoat, and the like) are a great start. High quality dry film corrosion inhibitors like Eez-Ox over blued steel work quite well too. Last, plain old parkerizing with lube saturated down into the porous surface also works incredibly well.

My P938 goes with me running/walking, bicycling, motorcycling, and hiking. If it looks rainy, it goes in a zip lock bag. I clean it and keep it oiled, but I would do that anyway.

It has become just a part of my gear and I no longer even think about it.

I started carrying it after a mountain lion followed me for about an hour on a bike trail in Colorado. I use a big elastic thing that goes around my mid section (it has to be big for me). It has a little "pocket" that the 938 fits in perfectly.
