i made a thread about the 30-30 my father gave me, but there's more. he also gave me a Remington 7400 30-06 and a scope. i can't get any pictures up of it right now but will do it later.

i did a search and read about this gun and was not too happy with what i read. a "jamomatic", apparently. i'm pretty sure my dad never even fired it once. i think i will try to sell this one.

would be interested in anyone's thoughts and knowledge about this rifle.

I was given a 7400 that wasn't operating reliably. Took it apart gave it a deep clean and repaired a cracked gas port nipple(?).

Been functioning great since. Have not had a single malfunction or jam since. Pretty accurate and harvests deer.

I also feed it moderate handloads. Figure no reason to beat it up.

But I believe most issues are a result of dirty actions/chambers etc.

As long as it's well.maintained and never been shot it may be fine. My BIL still has an old 740 in .308 that he still uses. My circa 1971 742 in 30-06 sits in the safe. It needs work but not because of jamming. I just haven't had the patience to take it apart.

My dad has a 742 in 308. It is actually relatively dependable. As long as you feed it ammo it likes. A lot of Milsurp stuff is a huge problem. Federal power shocks and Windchester PowerPoint? I think is the correct name? It seemed to really like. I have yet to feed it handloads. Accuracy is also a rather relative term. It’s one and a half to 2MOA at best. That said, that rifle has accounted for more Whitetails than several other firearms put together in our family.
If I were given one, you better believe I’d run it! Keep it clean, and you probably have a decent Whitetail rifle.
A trick that I just recently learned, is to take the forearm off, and pull the action open, and spray some wipeout bore cleaner in there. It will help you clean out the gas vents better than about anything else I have found, and it saves a tremendous amount of scrubbing!(use caution around the wood with that stuff…

Friend of mine has one in .308.. no issues.

My 1st centerfire deer rifle was a 742 in 30-06 and I shot the heck out of that rifle using my then 16yr old reloads, again I never had a problem with mine.

The internet seems to amplify the good and bad, but you'll probably never know till you try it.

I had a 742 in 30-06, it always ran well and had usable hunting accuracy but it had more felt recoil than my 300 win mag BAR.

i've read up on it a little. it can be a decent rifle for those who can strip, clean and lubricate it. i am not really a hunter anymore (but never was any good at hunting. never even killed a deer.) and i'm not willing to take it apart. so i'm going to try to put it up for sale and put whatever it brings towards my dad's senior living bill.

I have a 742 and a 7400, both in 30-06. If you keep them clean and don't let them get condensation or other moisture in the barrel and chamber they hold up pretty well. They do not stand up to rapid fire and high round counts or hot loads. The inner rails can get battered and cause jams. Mine have killed lots of deer and still can. I have had problems with feed lips on some clips. That's box magazine to the illiterate. They are not always jam-o-matics but they are subject to the problems mentioned. I would use it. I have seen used ones that were badly jammed.
