O.K. so here is the deal. I wanted an inexpensive, accurate rifle in 308 for a "budget sniper rifle". I love Savage rifles so I thought that would be a good place to start. However, while I was on the hunt for a base gun, I found this old school Savage in 270 Win. at a decent price. the bonus was that it is not in one of their flimsy plastic stocks. I am not sure which stock is on it but I think it might be a bell and Carlson. Whatever it is it is sturdy and it looks pretty good as well. The gun is still at the dealers but I was able to shoot it at 65 yards with a Leupold 4x12 VXII. After mounting the scope and getting it on paper I was able to punch a 3 shot sub inch group. This was off a very rickety bench while looking directly into the sun. It was also with some Remington reduced recoil ammo off the shelf. Needless to say there is a lot of room for improvement in the shooting conditions, at least.
So here are my questions.. The thing that I really like about Savage rifles is the ability to change calibers but, this is a long action rifle and I am seriously considering changing it over to 300 Win Mag. I know the 270 is a flat shooting rifle but can it really serve well as a " budget sniper rifle". The 300 Win Mag has lots of horse power and can be very accurate but it can also be very punishing. My main goal is for this rifle to shoot about 3/4 MOA or better out to around 600 yards. If it shoots accurately I may leave it alone. What I need to know is what am I giving up if I leave it a 270. Is it worth it to go to the 300 WM. What kind of accuracy can I expect from a Factory Savage barrel? Would it be worth it to go with something like a Pac-Nor instead? Any and all help would be appreciated.

cz..

I have a sub half moa .308 rifle I built off a long action savage. I started with a .30-06 instead of the 270.. but did it "on the cheap"

I spent less than 900 on the build for the rifle.. including a shilen .308 barrel, laminated thumbhole stock, pillar and glass bedded, and a 2 lb glass trigger. I'm not exactly done.. but could stop right now at this spot right now.

The problem with 270 is the lack of factory match ammo. There are a few match bullets out for it now with pretty good BC.

I would not go with a 300Winmag unless you are planning to shoot past 1000 yards regularly or plan on hunting large game at range. It's just too expensive and kicks too much for short range work.

If you want to rebarrel regular old 30-06 is a good long range round. With a long barrel you can load it near 300Winmag velocities for cheaper and it will get out to around 1400 to 1600 yards. There are even better long range rounds based off the 30-06 case head.

I didn't include short actions in my response as I don't know how well they feed out of a long action Savage.

I would seriously consider 308, 260, 6.5CM or the 243 for what you are planning.

I have no doubt that all of the 308 based calibers will work since Savage didn't have a short action rifle till about 25 years ago when they came out with the model 12 and such. I have my eye on a couple short barreled Savage model 10's right now. If I do switch this one over I think I want to keep it a longer cartridge. I have no love for the 30-06, I just don't. I already reload so loading for the 300 Win Mag won't be much more expensive than the 06'. I might consider a cartridge in 6.5 like 6.5-06. I would appreciate more suggestions.

6.5-.284 would do just about anything you need to do out to 1,000+yds.

Since you are a reloader everything is open to you. I still say the 300Winmag is going to hinder you with high recoil which is not needed at all at 600 yards.

I would leave it alone and try some 140 gr. Accubond handloads. That is a good bullet.

I would leave it in .270. Shooting under an inch in the conditions you describe means the rifle has potential. Save your $ for a nice trigger and components for experimentation. My two .270s both love Nosler ballistic tips and H4350. The sniper community likes the .308 simply because that is now the NATO standard. In the real world, the .270 can do anything the .308 can do, but flatter, making range estimation less critical.

Don't worry that you have a long action, it's truly the best of all worlds. I have a 260 (6.5mm) which I build on a LA. The rifle started out as a 300 Win Mag that I got from a pawn shop. I ended up changing out the bolt head and put a Shilen barrel on in in 260 Rem. as well as a SSS stock. It feeds perfectly (I did have to change out the mag to a 30-06 mag since it's a DBM) and have never had any issues at all. At 100 yards it will continue to stack bullets into the same hole if I do my part. Longest I've had it out to has been 300 yards because long range ranges out here in the east are tough to come by.

Use a LA because it will give you unlimited possibilities. Good luck on your build, you'll be happy with whatever savage you build.
