O.K. so here is the deal. I wanted an inexpensive, accurate rifle in 308 for a "budget sniper rifle". I love Savage rifles so I thought that would be a good place to start. However, while I was on the hunt for a base gun, I found this old school Savage in 270 Win. at a decent price. the bonus was that it is not in one of their flimsy plastic stocks. I am not sure which stock is on it but I think it might be a bell and Carlson. Whatever it is it is sturdy and it looks pretty good as well. The gun is still at the dealers but I was able to shoot it at 65 yards with a Leupold 4x12 VXII. After mounting the scope and getting it on paper I was able to punch a 3 shot sub inch group. This was off a very rickety bench while looking directly into the sun. It was also with some Remington reduced recoil ammo off the shelf. Needless to say there is a lot of room for improvement in the shooting conditions, at least.
So here are my questions.. The thing that I really like about Savage rifles is the ability to change calibers but, this is a long action rifle and I am seriously considering changing it over to 300 Win Mag. I know the 270 is a flat shooting rifle but can it really serve well as a " budget sniper rifle". The 300 Win Mag has lots of horse power and can be very accurate but it can also be very punishing. My main goal is for this rifle to shoot about 3/4 MOA or better out to around 600 yards. If it shoots accurately I may leave it alone. What I need to know is what am I giving up if I leave it a 270. Is it worth it to go to the 300 WM. What kind of accuracy can I expect from a Factory Savage barrel? Would it be worth it to go with something like a Pac-Nor instead? Any and all help would be appreciated.
