Savage in .270

I really like the Accutrigger and have heard nothing but good things about Savage Rifles.

I'm looking to purchase one in .270 (NOT .270 WSM).

I wanted a good all around cartridge for long range target and any range hunting and .270 was it. (don't try to convince me of another cartridge. Magnums are a waste of power unless you're hunting HUGE game, and I want to be able to shoot 150gr bullets if need-be, but am fine with an intermediate 130gr. AND I want 3000FPS MV sooo that lead me to .270)

So anyway, I'd like to know if a normal barreled Savage will be fine to shoot slow groups at a long distance (500yrds) or if I need a heavier contoured barrel. I don't mind sacrificing a little weight for better accuracy but I don't need a 1" Bull Barrel or anything.

What Savage gun will give me the best combination of thick-barrel contour and light weight? Keep in mind It's a Long action and needs the Accutrigger.

As far as I know there are only sporter weight barrels offered for 270win be it Savage or any other manufacturer.

now you could special order a shillen heavy 270 bbl and install it yourself with the savage platform. If you're really planning on getting into distance shooting you'll really welcome the additional accuracy a shillen barrel will offer over the stocker.

Going from a factory savage barrel to a shilen netted me a 50% reduction in average group size

You can order heavier contour barrels if the sporter weight doesn't do what you want. Adams and Bennett does this for Savage rifles, I think. One neat thing about the Savage is the ease of changing barrels (relatively)
My 110 in 270 (non-accutrigger) will shoot sub 1 inch groups all day at 100 yards. I don't know about 500 yards. there are a lot of variables that come into play that far away.

+1 for .35Rem's comments. The "factory-issue" Savage sporter may well give you a very pleasant surprise in .270 - and if it doesn't you'll still have the easy and relatively inexpensive option of ordering a premium/custom barrel.

Thanks for the responses. I think I'm going to order a Savage Accutrigger Long Action and then stick a .270 Shillen barrel on it. Then All I need is the Stock and I'm ready to go.

I don't want a Bull barrel, but a nice heavy or Varmint contour might be what the doctor ordered.

Chrome-Moly Match Shillen barrels have such a nice ring to it too!

So you have the standard 110 contour barrel and have no issues with accuracy?

If you're going to shoot at 500, a 6.5X55 will give you much better results than a 270. You can get better bullets in 6.5.

I found a used, fluted, stainless, magnum contour 270 barrel with the factory brake on Savageshooters for $75. Installed it on my son's 270 just for the cool factor.

I absolutely admire the .270 seven days a week but "ski's" comment about the 6.5x55 and its' bullets is well worth a goodly amount of thought.

there's no reason not to give the good OL 270 it's time in the sun, especially since Berger has expanded their VLD line to include .277

when loaded with the above projectiles out to 600 yds there isn't a darn thing 6.5x55 will do that 270 won't do better, largely due to 270's increased horsepower over the swede

I agree about the 6.5x55.... But I can find .270 at the local Walmart if necessary. They don't carry 6.5x55 at the closest one... not saying Wally world NEVER stocks it but .270 is easier to come by in my experience...

Convenience of finding the caliber in stock was also a factor in my decision.

If you're not gonna handload you need to go with a more mainstream LR precision cartridge than either 6.5x55 or 270 simply because there are no factory loadings that offer the accuracy or ballistic performance you'll want.

Wal mart doesn't carry the kind of ammo that will make a 500yd shooter happy...In any caliber

as a non handloader your best options are .223 shooting 77grn Black Hills ammo

or 308 shooting 168grn federal gold match

and that's about it

I'll say it. Wally world never stocks 6.5x55. Unless there is a Wally world in Norway.

And the BCs on a 6.5, at least from Berger, kill a 270. Although that isn't important to this thread.

believe it or not theres a small wal mart in an out of the way community in the middle of nowhere that has stocked 30/40, 7x57 AND 6.5x55 as recently as last year

You're wrong about the 6.5

Sure the HEAVY Berger 6.5's have good BC but then you're shooting 2650 FPS. To get good velocity (over 3000FPS) you need a 100-110gr bullet which would have worse than the 120gr's .492 BC (Berger website).

The 140gr .270 is faster than the 120gr 6.5x55 and the Berger BC for the 140gr .270 is .509.

.270... MORE SPEED with similar BC bullets.

.270 > 6.5x55


Now, the 140gr Berger 6.5's have a nice .640 BC but that slows you down to 2650 FPS....

I don't want a 6.5... I want a .270.

Now that we have that done, Will a regular barreled savage be fine for slow groups (5 shots in 15 mins or so) or will I see significant stringing due to heat?

It all depends on how long you're willing to wait between shots
