Hi all,

I saw a Remington Sportsman 48 for $150 the other day in a local gunstore. I'm very tempted by it. Does that seem like a good deal? Can anyone tell me anything about this gun (is it even worth considering) and if I decide to go pick it up what kind of things can I look for to make sure it's not a lemon.

Thanks,

Crazy Stu

The Sportsman is a variant of the 11-48. IIRC, the design limits it to 3 shots.

The 11-48 was a long recoil design from John M Browning's patents. Durable as heck, reliable too. Definitely worth considering.

Good pointer too.

Unless this one is a victim of abuse, very good price.

I have a Sportsman 48 in 20 ga. that I think I paid about $300 for.

I love it! Beautiful little gun and shoots very well. I sometimes take it to the Sporting Clays range even though its full choked.

If it is in good shape, that's a great price!

Thanks both. I went back to the gun store today and I'm glad I took a closer look. It looks like someone took a nail and tried to scratch their name into the inside of the receiver while they were drunk, while simultaneously banging on the forestock with a hamer. The Remington model 48 next to it was selling for $250 which further convinced this gun wouldn't be the best of buys. I'll keep on looking (maybe even talk myself into a used 11-87).
