Ok I'm trying to get my pack together for my first deer season. I was hoping some of you old timers can list the basic contents of your pack when you head out deer hunting. Anything cheap that can serve multiple purposes would be especially of interest. Thanks for yer help.

1. Archery, BP or Rifle?
2. What state and climate?
3. Will you be sleeping out in the woods? If so how many nights?
4. Are you going on your own or in a group?

Answering these questions will help people know what you need.
What I pack for a morning on the deer stand is alot diffrent from
what I pack to go on a 5 day rifle hunt.

Aways have good boots and a first aid kit.

This is what I carry and I hunt in TN. So, I'm not too far south of you. First I am going to assume you are not archery hunting in warm weather.

I have two sets of coats that I wear. One is for moderately cold which I layer with other clothes as needed for warmth and take the stuff off as the day progresses (usually warming). The other coat which I seldom wear is for COLD weather where the morning temps are like 20 degrees F and will not warm up much past the mid-30's.

If the weather looks like rain, I have a very large poncho (parka) that will fit over my hunting clothes and this gets carried in a day pack.

Stuff that I almost always carry: License; two knives (one medium fixed blade and pocket folder); compass; dragging rope; cell phone; ear plugs, (game ear too); toilet paper or paper towels; a couple zip locks bags-qt size usually; trail mix (nuts and dried fruit) to munch on; hard candy; couple water bottles; gloves; mono-pod; binoculars; ammo; a few band aids; fleece sweatshirt or sweater in pack; matches; small or partial roll of surveyors flagging (tape); wool scarf; scent; lunch if not going back to vehicle; granola bars; head lamp or small flash light (or both); folded up topomap; (aerial photos work too if you hunt fields); GPS if you have one (I don't); and basic items like a pair of good boots that fit the terrain.

I don't hunt that far from my vehicle (20 min brisk walk) so if I'm successful, I walk back after I have field dressed the deer and get my game cart. I would bring in the game cart and leave it somewhere I can find it easily (within eye sight of stand) if I was very far from my vehicle or fairly certain I would be successful. I keep extra ammo inside my truck just in case but have never needed it. Usually one or two shots is all you really need although I usually have at least one reload with me; often two. I don't want to drag another deer out again; hence the game cart.

I keep survival stuff in my truck. Blanket, sleeping bag, shovel, tarp, first aid kit, tow rope, more muchies, more clothes if I get soaked etc. Equipment that might be necessary if you have to spend the night. I really don't like to rough it if I don't have to.

I thought you meant "pack" as in carry concealed, when I saw the thread title. Be aware of your local laws if you are going to carry a handgun as backup. KY forbids the carry of any firearm with a capacity greater than 10+1 while hunting deer.

Hunting Gear

I'm gonna assume you've been camping before and leave out the obvious stuff like a sleeping bag and tent and food. This is geared more for your time actually in the field in predator mode

Backpack. Not a big one, get a day pack and preferably one with the bladder built in. Mine is 1500 cc.
Rifle. Bring some ammo but not too much. Say 5 rounds or so.
Handgun. I like a revolver with snake shot. I hate snakes.
Water. Bring plenty of water.
Your license. Don't forget to have your hunting license and deer tags
Knife. If your lucky, you'll get a deer and need to field dress him.
Rope. Always helpful - from dragging the deer out to helping to lift guns and bags into a stand to hoisting the deer for butchering.
Food. Your going in the woods. Something bad can always happen or you can get lost. Bring enough food for the day you expect to be out as well as enough for an extra day. Nothing gourmet, just the essential calories you need.
Ziplock baggies. For you food. Don't want it to give away your location.
Hat. It gets cold in the woods. Get a hunter orange hat. I usually bring two hats - a baseball hat and a wool hat.
Compass. You can bring a GPS if you want, but get a compass and learn how to use it.
Paperback book. Always worth bringing some reading material
Binoculars. Helps you see.
Gloves. Keep the digits warm..
Rubber Dish Gloves or Latex Gloves. dressing an animal can get messy
A Hand Towel. Dressing an animal can get messy.
A Friend. Find someone to show you the ropes.
Markers. Something to mark your location/trail. I have thumbtacks I put in the tree as well as little plastic strips I tie on branches.
Maxi Pad. Better than moleskin.
Cell phone. Don' trely on it, but good to have
Small flashlight. I actually have a "wind up" on I can carry in my hand (size of a coke can) and I have one of the LCD lights that attaches to the brim of your hat.
Map. Of the area. Duh!

It is also wise IMHO to have a small piece of paper in your wallet that has your medical information on it.

This kind of information can help you in the event you are found unconscious or unable to communicate.

Example:

Medical History (High blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, etc....)

Surgical History (Appendectomy, Left shoulder surgery, etc....)

Medicines (Name, dosage, frequency)

Allergies

Social History (Tobacco, Alcohol,Drug use......)

Family Physician (name and number)

The lists above give pretty comprehensive ideas. Consider a small saw; a pencil stub; I substitute cheesecloth for rags/towel (wrap the heart & liver in it for the pack out). I always carry a whistle & my flashlight(s) are on a lanyard that I slip over my wrist (a broken or lost light ain't worth squat in the dark). I also carry Steri-Strips in my FA kit & a pair of disposable gloves. Extra food, a candle, & a space blanket make an unplanned night in the boonies a bit more enjoyable.

Pack a good book cause if you're anywhere my area--you ain't gonna shot anything. There's probably 2 deers left is this state.
