What to say to the 911 operator

As long as context is at issue, what
do you think the context of st. john's statements " if only.." and "the way it SHOULD play out" was in this situation ? Especially when you consider that st. john was actually refering to MY post here

You: My name is XXX I am calling from XXX. I need to report a shooting at this location. We need police and EMS please.

Which he embellished by adding refference to the coroner.

I'd rather it be that then "This is the room where that guy beat me unconscious then raped my sister".

Please don't try to force me to defend an position I don't agree with.

Given the option of having my home invaded and my wife violated or shooting and killing an intruder, I'd much rather the intruder die. In fact, I will do everything in my power to ensure it.

What I don't do is look forward to the occasion

Rockwell isn't saying he would lie down and let the intruder have his way. He is saying that while he would do what it necessary to bag the scum, he won't relish it.

If and I mean if I ever have to fire my weapon it will be to kill the person, that is the only way to truly stop a threat. You don't shoot to wound or scare some one. I will only shoot if I have to, so it will be a good shoot.

Gotcha, I guess I misread your post.
And I completely agree that none of us should ever look forward to such an occasion. I stay prepared in case something like that ever happens, and I'd like to think that I would have no problem killing an intruder, but I sure hope I never have to find out.

If the intruder was in HIS house instead of the opposite, who exactly appears to be "looking forward to" the encounter?

Or are you saying that he'd have a "Home invaders come on in!" sign in front of his house?

Not letting somebody harm me gratuitously doesn't "harm my psyche" in ANY way, whether by calling the police or shooting him in the head.

The assumption here should be that it was a legitimate defensive shooting whether in the home or on the street. Defending against "death or grave bodily harm".

Much of the training out there, classroom, videos, books etc. concentrate on what transpires when the police arrive and what to say or not say. My point was that you may very well shoot yourself in the foot by rambling when you call 911.

I see no advantage to staying on the line with 911 once the relevant info has been passed along.

My feeling is if there's a situation that requires emergency services, my efforts and attention are best spent dealing with it.

This side issue has pretty much been resolved you may want to re-read the relevent posts

You are free to formulate your own opinion

(With the exception of "tried to steal my car" - it is illegal in most states to shoot in defense of property. Even where legal it will surely not look very good for you.)

This really needs to be clarified. You are absolutely allowed, and within the letter of the law, to try to stop someone stealing your property. IF, during the incident, the thief then turns aggressor and tries to attack you, you can defend yourself. You are not shooting someone to protect your property, only your life. You are not relegated to bystander status and have to watch people steal you belongings just because you have a firearm in your possesion...this is completely untrue.

AND

Not everyone who has taken a life has issues with their "psyche". Many feel completely justified in their actions. Every situation is different as well as the people involved in them, so to make a blanket statement like that is fundamentally incorrect.

If I had shot someone in my home and was not under further attack, I would not dial 911. There would be no emergency to report. After I calmed down, and thought over what I'd say, I would dial the Watch Commander of local PD on their non-emergency line. I wouldn't take too long to calm down and prepare, since the neighbors might, maybe, call 911 first. But I'd get through faster, I'd be talking to an intelligent person, probably one I knew, and I would not be recorded. When police arrived to investigate, they would not arrive with guns drawn, barking commands and "clearing" my home. They would be invited peacefully onto the premises, greeted at the outer door by a calm, collected, prepared witness.
