I am going hunting this weekend and I am taking my Savage 99 in 300 savage tommorow to the range to see if its off. This hunting trip was sort of a surprise, so if my gun is not "on" my friend has an extra gun, but I would rather use my own(it just doesnt feel right using someone elses gun".

I shot a deer about two years ago, but I have gently moved the gun around several times since, so I want to make sure that my scope didnt get knocked around too much.

My question is, what type of groups should I get from the following set up? I am trying to shoot some deer, not win a competion. thanks for your help

The average Savage 99 will shoot ammo that it likes into 1"-1 1/2" five-shot groups at 100 yards. Practical accuracy for hunting deer is much less stringent; the average shot IIRC is somewhere around 80 yards and the kill zone for deer is somewhere betwen 6" and 10" depending on the size of the deer. You do the math.

Remember, it's not the group size that matters - it's making sure that the first shot on a cold barrel goes pretty much where you intended it to go. Shoot a shot, let the barrel cool, shot another one, let the barrel cool, and so forth....
