Is the 300 savage enough for elk? For some reason I feel like it is
"light" for elk, since everyone these days has a 300,7mag or hot 306s.

I am thinking about an elk trip in the near future and I am wondering how this would fare on elk.

Gun is a savage 99 with a 2x7 leupold.

The .300 Sav killed a pile of elk in its day before the other cartridges you mentioned were available. It will still do a fine job for you if you do your part and place your shots carefully. All that being said, I'd probably choose something with more reach if other options were available.

I know a guy who swears it is the best cartridge around. He reloads, so who am I to argue. The guy knows his stuff. I like the 308, but I don't reload and ammo is cheap and plentiful.

I'd feel perfectly comfortable with the 300 Savage. I wouldn't hunt moose with either. Short of that and Coastal Brownies you won't be undergunned.

I used a .308 and my hunting buddy used a .300 Savage for years. I don't think the elk we killed knew the difference. I use a .300 Win Mag now, but that's only because of the area I hunt these days, ranges tend to be a lot longer.

That's a *great* rifle/chambering/scope combination - don't sweat it. The biggest issue is that the 300 Savage (and 308) don't quite have as flat a trajectory or quite as much punch with the heavier bullets at longer (250+ yard) ranges.

Use a good bullet, place your shot (know your load), and you'll be fine.
