What would be a fair price for this gun?

I was looking for a 629-4 full lug 5”, I found a S&W 629-4 performance with a ported barrel and cut for moon clips and it came with the aluminum PC box/papers, I ended up paying $1000 for it. At the time around here most 629 were $600-$800. I paid what I was willing to pay, not what what everyone thought what is was worth. It was something I wanted and was out of production. God knows it’s not always in my budget to be able to do that. At the time I saved up $1000 for that purpose.

Good luck with whatever you end up with and post pics.

That's cool. How long ago was this?

SW 629 Mountain Gun. One is $1,399 while a more used one is $1,100.

I am interested in the one in better condition.

"Fair price" is highly subjective. The revolvers are worth as much as you're willing to pay. I wouldn't worry one bit about MIM parts. This type production keeps costs down and if S&W used machined parts, the same people complaining about MIM parts would then complain that the prices are too high.

Here's a pretty easy way to get an idea of selling prices of most any firearm. Go to Gunbroker, Advanced Search, click the Completed tab then if you want type something in the search box. (Not necessary as you can filter the results). Next scroll down to the bottom and in the Sort By field select "Highest Number of Bids First". I searched Mountain Gun and got these results-

As you can see, .44 Magnum Mountain Guns $1000 and under are not too uncommon.

Wow, that's awesome!

Thanks!

I checked it out and a lot of the ones in the $1k price range and lower were used. I did end up buying the NIB Mountain Gun, so excited to get that. Thanks for all of the help everyone.

Really, any of them. Depends on how much it means to you. I passed up one in .41 magnum back in 1998 in a gun store. One of only two missed opportunity regrets that I have. That and an unfired royal blue Python on consignment for $500 in 1996.

Ha, I thought of your missed opportunity regrets and you don't see a lot of NIB Mountain Guns so I bought it at the purchase price about an hour before the bid ended. The prices do seem a bit high now but who knows when they will go down. A few hundred bucks at the moment won't kill me but years later I would regret it I think. I just like having something new so that I know it should be 100% good to go.

Thanks all for the advice.

The Pre Lock models go for much more than the post 629-6 models with the lock you see selling for $800. I have one with the lock. I paid $495.00 for it used 7 years ago, and I removed the lock. Mine shoots great. And it has a very smooth light trigger, after a little spring work.

Awesome! Can’t wait to see some pics!

I paid 750 for mine (slightly used pre lock) about 6 months. I would not spend money on a pistol with a lock. I thought at the time that was a fair price and still believe that is what they should go for if used. Seems to me most of the 44 magnums I see are not shot a significant amount. Some pretty good deals out there on used ones. You just got to look.

Just thought I'd update this thread.

After careful consideration I chose to buy the gun. You don't find a lot of NIB 629-5 Mountain Guns. I am so happy I did afterward too. I know I would feel regret afterwards if I hadn't bought it. It is the one gun I've ever bought that I am actually really excited to shoot.

Also, after I posted it the seller put an older, NIB, but less desirable in my opinion Mountain Gun for like $350 more. He must have felt really confident after I paid full asking price for mine.

Thanks for all your help!

The $1100 gun and a hour or so with a bottle of flitz and an old wash rag will get you the best deal for a gun to shoot. The top gun is a better deal for a gun that you may eventually sell because it is still “complete” as shipped with the box and other stuff. I think that right now the entire revolver market is overpriced for some reason. Guns are selling higher than I have seen in recent times, and I’m not sure if it’s the looming election, the other political nonsense or what, but somethings up. Those should be more in the $750 and $1000 range, but for where things currently sit on the market I would say they are both at the top end of the sanity range. Cut 200 off both and they are more in line with where they should be.

If you use Flitz be careful on the barrel. The “Mountain Gun” and “44 Magnum” writing on the side isn’t engraved into the barrel. Mine came pretty much worn off from the prior owner(s) polishing the sides of the barrel without watching for that, so depending on the angle it is a bit tough to read at times.

I’m glad to see they’re increasing in value, I got mine used about 6 years ago for $550.00 I believe.

Stay safe.

Nice. I wish it was engraved. The way they did it seems so cheap.
