What would cause a jam like this ?

The pistol is a hamden hi standard victor. gun was clean before firing, magazine is relatively new. after a few shots i get a jam like this,where the round hits above the chamber.seems like it happens in almost every mag full.used different types of ammo,too. tried loading only 8 rounds,still happens.is it the magazine or a weak recoil spring? any ideas would be great.

Hello friends and neighbors // Try pinching the lips of the mag closed a little.

Make sure when someone feeds the ammo, they do no force the wider base thru the center of the lips but sort of hook the ammo on the front of the mag then push down and back.

HTH till someone like RC gets here, my arm isn't long enough to hold a candle for some of these folks.

Definitely a magazine-induced stoppage. The magazine is releasing the cartridge too soon. And that's because the front lips are spread too wide. So the above advice is right on.

ill try this method. thanks.i was worried it was the gun,but suspected the magazine. why would it jam in the middle of an empty mag instead of the beginning or end?

High Standard pistols are famous for magazine problems because the mag lips act as the feed ramp...it's just they way they are designed.

Search the internet and there is a site when someone explains the correct geometry the lips should have and sells a tool for bending the lips correctly.

One of the complaints about the new HS in Huston was that their magazines had soft feedlips and would not hold an angle

Find a small 'bolt' where the head of the bolt is wider than the mag lip opening, you can "notch" two sides of the unthreaded portion below the head (fine tooth hacksaw) and use these two notches to adjust the mag lips nicely.

It is defiantly a magazine lip problem... do yourself a favor, find someone that KNOWS how to do it and have them show you how.. It is not difficult, and the tools needed are, as stated easy to come by or make.. however you want to avoid a lot of "Trial and Error" adjustments.. it will effect the metallurgy of the mag lips, you want to avoid "Work Hardening" the lips.. They can just about all be reshaped a few times with no problem what soever, you just don't want to overdo it...

When the mag is full, the cartridges create friction against the magazine walls. When the magazine is nearly empty, the spring is extended and providing less force. But right in the middle, you have a situation where spring preload vs. friction resistance exceeds the tension of the magazine lips and causes the cartridge to spread them just enough.

Bending the mag lips, as suggested, should cure this, though it may take a couple tries to get it right. If the problem persists, bend them more. If you bend them too far and it won't feed, spread them back out a little.

Yup. Adjust mag feed lips so they exit the mag and enter the chamber at the correct angle every time. Also try different ammo if the adjustment doesn't work.

Different ammo does make a big difference in mine.

Mine has always liked Federal and CCI 'target' ammo.

It will not feed /shoot Winchester or Remington.

Good advice and let me add that the mention target ammo is of particular note: the use of high velocity ammo in these guns can damage them.

Is it a genuine High Standard mag or Triple-K aftermarket? Many people report issues with anything other than a HS mag. New manufacture HS mags are available from Brownells. The preferred replacement is the metal base one, plastic base mags will sometimes break.
If you make the adjuster tool use a Dremel cut-off wheel to make the slot, a hacksaw makes the slot too wide to work well.
And you should only shoot standard velocity ammo in the original HS guns. Do a search on frame cracking issues.

I have a Hamden Victor, the trigger is so sweet I'll put up with its finnicky ammo requirements. My mag is tuned for CCI standard velocity. FYI Al Marvel makes a scope base that replaces the sight rib, no gunsmithing required.
