ground rules:

no derringers, must have at least a 5 shot capacity
no .22/.25/.32s
at least .380/.38/9mm caliber
reasonable size limit, something that could reasonably fit into khaki shorts

let's say you start the list with these:

Kel Tec P3AT
Kahr PM9
S&W shrouded hammer airweight J Frame
Kel Tec P11
NAA Guardian .380

what would you add?

I fit my Ruger SP101 (2.5 inch barrel) and my Glock 36 into my trouser pockets without trouble.

Colt Government/Mustang/Pony .380
Colt Cobra .38
Makarov (if you've got big pockets)

and...even though you said no .32s...

Colt Model M (rebarrel it to .380 if you just can't stomach a .32)

My list of pocket guns is as follows:

S&W 340PD. The Genoowine Pocket 357, a.k.a. the Beast, the Knuckleduster, the Wristcracker, the Pound.

No really, it's not all that bad to shoot, and it's the best balance of weight and power in the world, no doubt.

S&W 642 goes on the list without a doubt! If you don't mind the extra weight add the S&W 640 in .357.

S&W 642 without a doubt. 5 rounds of .38Spl+P (very effective rounds available), absolute reliability, completely enclosed / snag free hammer design (will operate in any environment), effective accuracy within 15 yards with minimal "gun handling" skills, 15 ounces empty and a simple / safe operating system.

Billmanweh,
On the list you provided - the S&W lightweight J frame is the only way to go. Around here the S&W 642 can be bought new most anywhere for $350 or less. Get one of the pricey .357 lightweights if budget & desire permits. But the .38Spl +P will fill your needs.

Now if you are talking sub-compact, and are willing to give up a bit in the areas of reliability & knock down power - the choices (IMHO) are the Kel-Tec P-32 in .32acp or Bereta 950BS in .25acp. The others listed - experiment at your own risk & budget tolerance.

True pocket?

I am with Jody regarding R9 - I now have two and the latest is for sure gonna be regular BUG or when necessary - primary.

Otherwise I do have a soft spot for Bersa .380, despite weight.

THAT is a new designed & manufactured gun that has been on the market for just a couple of years and will cost you the high side of $1,000 to purchace.

If you have to ask what it is - it's best to avoid it (unless you are REALLY flush with disposable cash - and have other suitable firearms readily at hand).

Remove the XD

No way a Springfield XD subcompact counts as a pocket gun. I know...I carry one daily. The grip is too long for that and it's just too heavy to fit in the average pocket unobtrusively and without printing. I haven't tried a Glock subcompact but those do have shorter grips than the XD. Still seems like those would be too heavy too. They are in a different league of size from the KelTecs, Rohrbaughs and Kahrs.
