What is a great .223 Semi Auto. for the money?.

I shot my buddies AR15 and Ruger mini-14, I like the mini, however, not as accurate as the AR, and his mini 14 occasionally has FTF's.

The gun need not be a battle rifle, just accurate and reliability reputation.

What state do you live in?

Get a Saiga for ~$385, put in another $200 for some parts to convert it, you'll have an awesome, custom, kickass .223

Accurate the mini-14 is not. At least not pinpoint. 2 inches at 100 yards is typical for the new 58x series. But they are fun.

You'd be hard pressed to find a more accurate and flexible 223 than an AR. They are more expensive, but there a about a million aftermarket parts and accessories for them. You can build them into exactly what you want, from compact battle rifle to obscenely accurate target or varmint rifle.

AR-15! Its like adult tinker toys. Its modular, you can make it into anything you want. Switch out stocks, upper recievers, grips, put on different forends, rails, drop in match triggers, add various optics, etc.

Tip top manufacturers are Colt, LMT, Noveske. Others that make a quality product are Stag, Rock River, Bushmaster, DPMS. Just avoid Vulcan/Hesse and I've heard that Olympic has put out some sketchy stuff in the past.

I think that both of these rifles are "great, for the money", which is why I have them:

-basic AR15 type, pick your maker and barrel length
-Robinson XCR

Was the Mini a 580 series? In no the older ones were not as accurate. The 580 series are very accurate rifles, nearly on par with a good AR.

Problem with FTFs and FTEs with Minis are the magazines. ARs have much more widely available quality magazines for them. Ruger mags function flawlessly in Minis, but are more expensive.

Also look at the KelTec SU-16C or 16CA as they are a nice .223/5.56 rifle. They can be had for about $550 and take standard AR mags. I am actually thinking of picking one up in the future.
