White-tailed deer
Black bear
Waterfowl
Small game, furbearers, other species
Pheasant
Wild turkey
Moose (Click for some pics from last fall's moose hunt

(under 'waterfowl' and 'small game' categories there is a further breakdown of about 20 species each).

I think the Moose has got to be NH's most visually impressive game animal

"...Will a 308 do a moose..." Easily. It'll take any game in North America. Providing the shot is placed correctly.

If you used the right bullets, got close enough, and picked your shot carefully a 6.5x55SE will kill a moose just fine. At least that's what about century of Scandanavian hunting experience would tell me. As far as the "right" bullet, probably any premium 150-160 grain bullet will work well. As for range, well I don't know enough about the ballistics to comment when it comes to shooting moose. I would imagine though that would not be all that hard to figure out as it will be a combination of your skills at placing the bullets in the kill zone and the energy/velocity retained at various ranges. So, if a 6.5 Swede will kill a moose, I'm sure that with proper bullet selection and within appropriate ranges anything bigger, such as .308, will also kill them just as dead.

You seem to be asking if a .308 will kill a variety of animals. I'm assuming that's because you already have one, and want to know if it'll be effective or if you need to step up to a more powerful weapon. Aside from perhaps buffalo, there's not much NA game that can't be killed humanely with a good shot at an appropriate range from a .308. Even buffalo, if you can get close enough for a brain shot are well within the purvue of the .308.

twoblink,

The hunting's good here and so is the fishing. Generally I'd rather that most people stay away but there's always room for right-minded types. We're close to Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island, New York, Massachusetts, and even Canada. I live in NH and work in downtown Boston. Our quality of life here is very high. The fishing is also very good, both fresh and salt water.

A friend of mine used a .300 Savage to take a very nice moose last year so the .308 is certainly up to the task. Range and placement, as always.

Stand_Watie,

What zone or town did you take that moose in?

This might be a stupid thing; but what do you do with the moose afterwards?

New Rug in front of the fireplace?
New Mantle piece?
Moose burgers?

Or all of the above? I'm thinking moose meat is a bit on the tough side, but then again, I'm Chinese so I'll eat anything that doesn't eat me first :D

inGodwetrust;

I am a card carrying libertarian..

I believe in no taxes, consenting adults can basically do whatever they like, Vermont style ccw, and did I mention no taxes?

Do I qualify?

On the "Smallest Political Test" I scored 100% libertarian.. hehehe

You share the meat out to your family/neighbors, and the head gets mounted at somebodies hunting lodge where grown men drink too much, put silly hats on it, and then photograph themselves with it. You might want to contact LL Bean about the hide, I've had a couple pairs of these, very nice.

What's the best way to find huntable areas? DFW? Lodging owners? I want to hunt grouse this fall and plan on going to the state and national forests or WMA's...any other ideas? Thanks.
