So I've got a brand-new SA xD .45 ACP 4" that will be my primary carry. The problem is, I need ways to carry it that make it very invisible. The weapon is kept secreted away because I live on-campus and we aren't suppose to "carry" on campus. So I mostly quickly jump into my car when I'm heading out and the two minutes that I'm heading to the car I can't risk any spots.

I need a good holster and carry system that will work. I usually wear loose jeans and stuff like hoodies or leather jackets because I'm in Alaska. I've carried it a few times with the holster that it came with but it moved around too much on my hip. I've got a shoulder holster for it but I can't really get it comfortable enough.

What do you guys recommend? What's the most comfortable way to carry a gun like this?

Don Hume

I use a Yaqui Slide-On from Don Hume. It's inexpensive, not cheap and it has tension screws for better retension. www.donhume.com

If you have too carry concealed, the fanny pack would be the most
logical choice for the large frame (full size) Springfield XD .45ACP.
The length of the grip is of major concern when carrying the XD
in a belt holster; as it most certainly will always "print"~! :uhoh:

A fanny pack may work on campus or on a hike, but anyplace else? I think not.

I carry the xd45Compact every day IWB. If the OP has the full-length service model frame its a lot different and more difficult.

Somebody out there makes a dayplnner-type thing for off-body carry... I think I saw one in a Blue Press Dillon catalog.

An inside-the-waistband holster sounds like a good idea here, but it will probably be a little uncomfortable on your hip at first.

Anything but the one it came with. Desantis makes a nice one, no printing for me, but I've got the compact model.

Any recommendations on a IWB holster? I've got the 4" barrel model, so it's not full size. The day planner may work to move it in and out of campus.

I'm also looking for a good way to carry it while biking and hiking. We have a lot of bear and theft assaults on our trails and I want something that I can carry the pistol with zero risk of it falling out while running or biking. I can open carry it in the city, so this isn't a conceal carry problem (lotta OCs on the trails around here).

I have one of these for mine. I don't think you would have a problem concealing with the clothing you describe. The paddle on a good belt should keep it secure.

Sorry I didn't pay as close attention....the above link is to a OWB. One thing though is that you can adjust the retention screws which may help you feel more comfortable when hiking/biking. (can you pedal easily with an IWB?)

The 4" service model is "full-size". It's just not "tactical", in that it does not have the 5" barrel. It does have the full length grip frame that the compact does not.

I use the Galco Summer Comfort. I have one for each of my varying sizes of 1911s and now the XD45 Compact.

I kidney carry an XD.45 compact in one of three K&D Holsters or occasionally an .380 Bersa Thunder in an Dakota Defender.

All K&D Holsters are made from premium grade leather. All three designs I have are well thought out for concealment, ease of carry, retention, draw and reholster. The craftsmanship is nothing short of extraordinary. Second to none IMO The boning inside as well as the outside captures even the tiniest detail of the gun. On the inside of my Bersa holster you can read the Bersa logo. While adding to the beauty of the holster its primary function is gun retention. Securely holding your gun in place no matter what you are doing. You can hold these holsters upside down and the gun will not fall out. When reholstering it feels like the gun gets sucked in and snaps into place. All of the edges are precisely cut and you can not see where the different layers of leather are bonded together. Every single stitch is straight and exactly where it should be. A proprietary finishing process allows Kevin to make extremely thin holsters that retain its shape for a life time and keeps the holster mouth open for easy reholster. The pics do not even come close to doing these holsters justice.

The Maverick Defender is and adjustable locking cant holster. Using a rotating lock designed and manufactured for K&D Holsters it allows you to lock the holster at any angle you want. I carry mine at a 43 degree cant which sets the grip right where my hand naturally falls allowing for a faster draw and extremely comfortable carry especially when I am spending alot of time in the car. I can draw while seat belted by leaning forward slightly. It can be worn IWB or OWB (between the belt and pants). Slightly thicker than a Dakota Defender I use it under an normally untucked button down flannel shirt or sweat shirt during the cooler months

Even though I prefer a 43 degree cant. I am glad I did not ask for a complete redesign of the Eagle Defender. I really like its simple elegant minimalist look. The shark skin is subtle and gives it just enough pop to separate it from a run of the mill holster. Kevin did a great job adjusting it to suit my needs. He even made the grain of shark skin follow the contours of my gun which gives it a really nice look. Eagle Defender is my dress up OWB that I wear when I open carry or under layers of clothes. As stated above the retention is excellent. Critical fro an OWB IMO. It holds my XD close to my body the grip pressed snugly against me. It made me realize that I need a nice BBQ gun for OC

The Dakota Defender is my deep concealment holster. As I said above this too is an exceptionally well made holster It has wider wings than most other IWB holsters of this style which distribute the weight so well you barley feel your gun at all. It also seems to make the gun feel more stable on draw and reholster. The clips allow you to set how deep you want to carry as well as set the cant. Once you find that sweet spot the gun virtually disappears from your conscious awareness and as well as visually. I have no problem concealing wearing a light T-Shirt and shorts even under a loose tank top. When you do remember the gun the suede leather backing makes it feel great against the skin

Get a good belt. The Kahr online store has Mitch Rosen belts in stock, they're really great. Get a good (leather) holster. I use all Milt Sparks, the wait is entirely worth it. I would rather have a mediocre holster and a good belt than vice-versa.

If you have both those things you will have no trouble concealing with nothing more than a baggy shirt. You'll always have your gun on you, you won't risk leaving it somewhere in a bag or pack, and you just have to slide your hand under your shirt to get your hand on it, or lift with one hand and draw with the other when you need it 5 seconds ago.

4" Service Model XD

I carry my full size, Springfield XD .45ACP in a KC Custom
Leather belt slide OWB all leather holster. These are made by Mr.
Kenneth Campbell of KC Custom Leather, located in Springville,
Alabama. They make top quality leather products, on a custom
order basis. I also own the same holster design from KC Custom
Leather, for my 1911's. They all are affordable, and work well
for my frame - 5'10", and 190 lbs~! :scrutiny: ;)

I carry all of my XDs in a Crossbreed Supertuck. Easy to draw, easy to re-holster. I am thinking about getting the Dillon planner to supplement my Uncle Mike's computer case.

When I carry my XD9 4" its usually in a Comptac Paddle holster. It sits tight on my hip and doesnt flop around like the XD gear holster. Thats my carry setup for hunting season/winter carry as I usually have a coat on. Thats what I suggest if you typically wear a heavy cover garment(hoody or jacket) Quick and simple.
I also have a MTAC IWB holster for it, it works pretty well, just not how I prefer to carry. For deep concealment I carry the PM9 in a Don Hume clip on IWB holster or a pocket holster. Soon to add a 642 for BUG use or deeper concealment.

This is a pic of my XD45 Service in a #43 holster by FIST. This is a holster that can be worn either IWB or OWB. The single clip makes it easy on and easy off quickly and, for me, that is important. I recommend this holster for the XD quite highly - and particularly for the original concerns of the OP:)

Of course, a good gun belt will enhance this carry combo immensely.

Check out the carry pouch made by wilderness tactical. Their website is down right now...hopefully it's not terminal...but the product looks pretty doggone good. Search for it here on THR. I would describe it like a large kordura wallet or envelope that can either be carried on the belt, in the hand, or even on a seatbelt. Someone else suggested it to me - I don't have on yet, but it's on my list of toys to buy in the near future (after my CCL).

[edit: Here's a picture (http://gunsite.com/store/page5.html) - scroll the whole way down; the safepacker holster. It's large, but it's so different (i.e. not a fanny pack) that it doesn't scream "GUN!" See http://concealedcarryforum.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=196 for another pic)

Should have my belt from K&D Holster in a few days. I'll let you all know what I think of it when it comes in. Don't get a Streichers 5.11 leather belt those things SUCK They are not leather they have some cheesy coating on them that started to wear off within hours. Getting an exchange or my money back Streichers was a two month ordeal. Next time I think about buying something from Streichers I'll flush the money down the toilet
