I'm looking for a carry auto, .40 cal, compact or subcompact, and would like some opinions on what is the best for the $$ in function, durability, looks, concealment etc. Would like to stay in the $450 -$650 range.

Smith and Wesson M&P. About $500.
Springfield Armory XD. About $500.
Glock. About $500.

Good guns, available everywhere, sell like hotcakes.

If you asked 100 guys individually on this forum, you are likely to get 100 different answers -- all of them offered with sincerity and knowledge and a heartfelt, gotta-have-it appreciation for the gun that they would suggest to you. You'll hear lots of votes for Glocks, lots of votes for SIGs, lots of votes for Walthers, lots of votes for this and that and something else. I would suggest that you need to narrow the field a bit: run a search, do some homework, visit a range that rents guns, meet with your friends and neighbors who have guns, and winnow your interests down to three or four firearms that would make sense to you. From that list, then, you would get a better representation of points of view from individuals familiar with the guns in question.

Lots of possibilities exist, including the Walther PPS in .40 S&W, which is reliable, accurate, and as easy to conceal as anything on the market sporting that kind of firepower.

function ,durability, looks, concealment

The best is a CZ, Sig, 1911, 3rd Gen S&W, or BHP... in 9x19mm or .45 acp. .40s and durable (your criteria) don't go together. I'd look at the CZ P01 or CZ 75 Compact PCR in your price range.

In polymer guns, the Springfield, SW M&P, Taurus 24/7 or Millen. Pro, Walther, and a few others are nice guns. Got a friend who swears by his M&P.

ANYTHING but Glock.

This really and truly though, depends first and foremost on what your chosen METHOD of carry will be!

If you're going pocket carry or smartcarry, a Kahr MK9 or PM9 or similar is probably the best way to go. If you're going IWB belt carry, a single stack (or slim-slide 2stack) is the way to go (HK P7 or 1911 or BHP or a larger Kahr come to mind for IWB). For OWB or fanny pack carry, look at bulkier double-stacks - CZ compact, Sig Classic, wonder polymer gun, etc.

The two best (for me) concealed carry guns I've ever run across, for OWB carry, are the CZ 75 Compact PCR in 9x19 (which is very similar to the CZ P01), and the Taurus Millenium Pro in .45 acp. And of those two, the CZ is superior.

But again, if I was going IWB, it'd be different - a single stack. My favorite (and only now) gun that I carry IWB is a 1911 - a Sig GSR compact in .45 acp. See my sig line for my dream IWB belt carry sidearm.

What method of carry will you be using?

You also don't say where you are looking for CCW. Where I live, that could easily mean a CCW for one of the many mountain trails that are literally a 10-15 minute drive for most residents.

For these situations I would look to a Glock 29 in 10mm (that is a .40 caliber, thought not the 40 S&W cartridge you likely meant). I would like to advice the Witness compact in 10mm, and do if you can find one with the old style, non-scalloped slide. Also, the Dan Wesson CBOB in 10mm would be a good trail gun for CCW.

Edit: I see the previous poster will be competing with you for that CBOB.

No such thing as "best". Firearms all depend on the skill of the shooter.

You are on a fool's errand if you think there is one.

Try out several by renting or borrowing from friends, then choose the one that shoots and feels the best in your hands. Then train with it.

As stated above, do research online, talk to friends or others that have unbiased knowledge with pistols, go to ranges that rent firearms and try them all out. That is where you will answer your real questions.
I can recommend pistols to you that I would carry or pistols that work well in my hands, but that is just it, they work for me .....and they may not work to well for you.
There are plenty of options out there so take your time and evaluate them wisely.
Good Luck

I agree with these others that you'll have to find the one right for you. I'll recommend the Glocks for trial.

Go to a range that lets you rent guns, and try out the above suggested models. When you come across one that feels "right", that's the one for you.

I used to carry a Glock 23...used to think it was light..and still keep it in the truck...
Thin is in... now for me and the Ruger LCP is now my choice...$350 tops...slips in the back pocket under my wallet

S&W M&P 40c
Mine has been 100% reliable, is very accurate for a compact, and the interchangeable backstraps let you customize the grip. I can conceal it under a T-shirt using a Blade-Tech UCH.

A Taurus over a Glock? OP, please don't follow that advice!!!

This guy has had good luck with his little .40......

Glock 23. Same size as the model 19. Very concealble in my opinion. Might take a look at the S&W M&P also. Springfield XD is a good gun too but I prefer the Glock. Pretty it aint, but as dependable as hammer. It goes bang every time.:D

The Sig 239 is as accurate and reliable as any in it's size and price range.

The SIG P239 is a fine weapon. I have one. I used to carry it.
However, the S&W M&P40c, though roughly the same size, holds 3 more rounds and is lighter.

+1 for CZ

Just my .02. Recently bought my RAMI-P but I liked it the first box of FMJ I put thru it. It is really tight tho. Oh well just means more range time:cool: Research and put your hands on as many as possible before you buy it.

If you'er lookin' for a CC auto look no further then the Springfield XD40 subcompact. They run on average around $450-$550(though I got mine brand new for less then $300) They are extreamly accurate,I have no problems shooting 3"-4" groups at 50ft. They are very easy to strip, clean and maintain. And they are sturdy and robust lil' bastards,if ya run outta ammo you could always beat the guy over the head with it. I give it 2 thumbs up.

The "best" gun is the one YOU shoot the best. Asking a bunch of random strangers on the internet which gun you should buy is like asking a bunch of strangers which type of coffee to drink. Buy what YOU shoot well and fits YOUR hand. There are many different guns out there in the marketplace and if you stick to one of the more well-known brands you will find that you will be well armed indeed.

Basically do you prefer plastic or metal? External safety or no external safety? Single or double stack magazine? Shiny or not shiny? ONly YOU can answer those questions. You'll find someone who likes nearly any gun out there. Opinions are like butt holes- everyone has one and some stink.

CZ in 40 would be the P06, the P01 in 40, or the 40 Compact, steel frame standard safety. Subcompact would be RAMI 40.

Best? The one in your hand when you need it!

:p ANYTHING but Glock :p

Glock is an excellent choice, but I'm not a big fan of .40SW
Look at 9mm and 45 ACP offerings from Glock, I went with the G36.

For carry, I would look at the XD40SC. I own that and a Sig239 in 40. XD fits my hand better, manages the recoil better and holds more rounds. Cost me just north of $400. I've put well over 500 rounds thru it with no problems.
