I found a link a couple of days ago about some catastrophic (apparently) failure of a Fobus holster. The link to the video had been taken down. It was off The Gun Zone.

I'm asking because I want to get an inexpensive KYDEX belt holster for my P3AT. I already have a nice leather pocket holster for it, but want more options for carry. Leather is nice. But in an up coming 115 degree sweat environment, I don't think it is the way to go!!
I did an extensive e-search, but found no suitable candidates EXCEPT for the Fobus!!
I need to know what that video is all about!!

Any help or suggestions are appreciated!!
Note the operative word here is INEXPENSIVE!!!
Also, for the purposes of this discussion, nylon has the same undesirable material properties as leather!!

From what I understand Fobus holsters are injection molded but are not KYDEX! :(

Fobus Holsters

I have several Fobus holsters including one for my P3AT. All work really well. I had to lubricate some of them with silicone spray to get them to work properly when new. They all work fine now. They do make a noise when you pull the weapon out. If you think you might need to pull your weapon without making any noise, I suggest you look elsewhere. That said, I do like my fobus holsters. :)

You can find the video in this thread over on American Backyard. As far as the reliability of the holster goes, I don't use my Fobus for anything but admin and range carry. It's not a paddle, (My spider sense tingles about all paddles...) but I just don't trust plastic as much as I do leather.

The problem with inexpensive holsters is that they're CHEAP.
The operative word here is CHEAP!!

Why would you pay good money for a nice gun and then throw it into a cheap piece of crap to carry it in.

A well designed and constructed holster doesn't have to be expensive but it's very seldom inexpensive.
You get what you pay for. And a good gun deserves a good holster.
Your safety and the safety of your loved ones, deserves a good holster.

And by the way cows seem to do alright in hot weather.

Bluesbear,
I already have a K&D pocket defender.
I'm just not that crazy about pocket holsters!!
In fact, I've pretty much given it to my wife for her P32!!

Funds are a little tight right now, thanks to Uncle Sam!!

The Fobus would be as a stop gap measure until I could afford something better!!
It does not have to be pretty, just functional!!

I have a Fobus paddle

for my G22 and have used it a lot. I've never had a problem. What's interesting about these holsters is that it's almost impossible to sneak the gun out; it must be smartly jereked. And the pull must come from the right angle, namely that of the wearer. If you try to sneak or jerk it off someone else it's quite difficult.

Hard to imagine what 'catastrophic' holster failure means.

in the video in question the gun is grabbed from behind and twisted and the paddle breaks off the body of the holster. the bg has your gun and you have a paddle in your pants :neener: saddlebum

Take a look at the offerings by Uncle Mikes and Blade-tech. Both have inexpensive holsters that are much better than the Fobus models in my experience. Both are under $20 (I am referring to the injection molded Blade-tech). I use one of the Uncle Mikes paddle models for my G22 and have been very happy with it. I will likely get a couple more for other models of pistols.

I showed that video to my Dept some time ago - legal work in action to recall or replace, as that is our issue rig. Well, it WAS. Gonna be a whole bunch of used Glock Fobus paddles on the market soon.....

It does not matter to me how cheap something is if it does not fulfill its function.

A $15 Fobus to me is $15 wasted. I got one of these free with a handgun purchase once. It did not last out the day before it went into the trash. One of the worst designed holsters it has ever been my misfortune to try out.

I know that there are advocates of this holster, but I simply can't understand it. It is the same as someone telling me that they really like dirt sandwiches -- it just boogles my mind! Yeah a dirt sandwich is cheap, but still -------. :what:

It seems that all of the dealers in my area have a big cardboard box full of trade in and close out holsters. About half of them look like they were never worn.

If your loacl dealers have them too then take your gun and start looking for something that will fit.

It's a good way to get a decent holster at a great price.

Video was staged

I found a link a couple of days ago about some catastrophic (apparently) failure of a Fobus holster. The link to the video had been taken down. It was off The Gun Zone.

The video was staged.

Also, consider the source: The guy that runs that site is a certifiable nut-case.

Every time something costs less than the traditional answer yet works, theres a whole lot of resistance to it. I've been looking for an inside the pants holster for a Taurus PT-92, the options for non-Kydex are not only limited, they are way too expensive considering that my pants waistband hold the gun there all day on their own! Leather has become a lot like the 1911, a great idea that's way too damn expensive.

Yes it was staged, meaning the guy let someone come behind him and get his hands on the gun and holster, but it still broke in 2 pieces and the wearer ended up losing his gun.

That says it all......

Holsters are a subjective matter all together. For those who buy & wear their holster on a professional level need to invest in the best there is, as long as the best there is functions to their full benefit.

For someone that simply carrys concealed, the most expensive holster probably isn't neccessary. That doesn't mean that if you can afford it, you shouldn't buy if you want it, but there are many other less costly options out there that will work every bit as well.

I have several leather holsters, some were cheap, some were expensive, one was free, they do what I need them to do. I also got a Fobus holster with the recent purchase of my Springfield XD-9, I simply need a holster for the range, and this Fobus works like a charm. I have no need for another holster for this gun, I may some day down the road buy something in leather, but for now this Fobus paddle holster is all I need.

Besides, if I have a hundred bucks to spend on either 9mm ammo, or a fancy leather holster, I'm buying the ammo cause you can't shoot a holster...... :D

Hells Bellsâ„¢, Of course that video was staged.

Did ya really think anybody would believe that someone just happened to be standing around video taping some fat guy open carrying and just happened to catch a gun grab?

It was staged to show just how easy it can be to gain control of someone elses gun. Way to many people get their permit, strap on their hogleg, (of course these days perhaps squirrel leg would be a better description) and go blindly out into the world confident that they are now somehow safer than they were before. They don't realise that, to a bad guy, their weapon is a ripe cherry begging to be picked.

People in jail actually practice gun grabbing. Most police officers shot in the line of duty are shot with their own gun! No one is immune.

Weapon retention is VERY important. It should be considered and practiced. Remember the first rule of gun fighting is HAVE A GUN.

I used a Fobus Roto belt holster with a Taurus PT-111 for a 4-day handgun class. Lots and lots of drawing and reholstering. The thing held up pretty well for the price--in fact, much better than the mag pouches, which tend to lose their grip pretty quickly.

I've also noticed several local sheriff's deputies wearing Fobus gear (plainclothes and instructor wear), so they must think they're at least OK.

P.S. An editor once told us, "You get ONE exclamation point to use in your entire life, so use it well."
