Howdy, folks. When I get back from Iraq, I intend on getting an AR15 but I want to find the most inexpensive way to get there. The first and most obvious response is build one. The other is buy one. The features I'm looking for are collapsing bipod, forearm broomhandle grip, collapsing stock, iron sights, and picatinny rails on the top for possibly mounting optics in the future.

Which parts from which manufacturers would you reccomend for a "do it yourself" AR?

Which model and manufacturer would you recomend to buy the entire rifle?

So far the cheapest means I can find for an AR is to find a complete lower for sale locally (to avoid shipping+FFL charges), then buy a complete upper kit form DEL-TON. Upper kits can be mailed directly to you. If you can find a stripped lower you can order a complete rifle kit from them with the stock, complete upper, and lower parts kit.

If you want a bottom of the barrel POS, then grab the cheapest thing you can get. If you want a good mil spec gun with a life time warranty the Stags are under $900.

a Del Ton kit and an Essential Arms stripped lower would give you a good quality, inexpensive AR.

An Ameetec Arms lower ($199) is cheaper than buying a stripped lower and a lower parts kit.

I'd definitely shop around on the Equipment Exchange at AR15.com. A lot of dealers do business on the board and have the lowest prices I've seen.

+1 on the EE at AR15.com, good deals there if you're fast with the mouse.

Also, Delton & Stag are VERY good affordable brands to use as a platform. I've built several myself, and have always been impressed with the quality.

I have an Ameetec Arms lower with a RRA midlength upper. The only use I've gotten out of it is putting a couple hundred rounds through it with a Ciener .22 conversion kit this afternoon, so I really can't comment on durability. But, the finish is good, the M4 stock works fine, and there are no obvious flaws that would make me hesitate to buy from them again.

It seems like I got my upper and lower right before the really long wait times started. The lower has an H buffer and came from JKiser on ar15.com, and the upper is an A4 midlength w/ SS barrel from Legal Transfers. Both happened to be in stock when I ordered them this past October.

I bought an Ameetec upper, saved my money for a few months and ordered a Stag upper from JKiser. I bought a V-Tac sling for it. I fired it at a carbine side match after our IDPA match this past saturday. The last stage was awesome, you had to run-n-gun, taking out targets as you ran thru them! Whata rush!

Aaryq, I note you are in Iraq. Thank you for your Service to us. I understand the danger of your duty.
I have owned several Bushmasters and have been pleased with all. They seem to come in many confiqurations. I have never attempted to build one so the other members will help you there. Byron

I agree with this. If you shop around, you can get a Stag for about $800. It's easily the best bang for the buck.

Like the Stags but the model offerings seem limited. I had been thinking about an A3 Bushy Dissipator for the $850 range. I just wish those dang XCR's were a bit less. I also hope the have them come out in a .308 offering at some point.

When I bought my Colt, I could have bought a Bushmaster M4 for $895. My Tactical Carbine was $1295. I love Colt, but can't say anything bad about Bushmaster. I definitely gave it consideration, and would steer somebody toward their product if they're not brand partisans like me.

you can pick up most of what you want by getting an " m4gery " from bushmaster , rock river arms , stag ect.. . other than that shop for that special top end , or mod your top end out just the way you want it . Buy the bottom and barrel you want , then ad bells and whistles as time and money allows .

Both my roomate and I picked up slightly used Bushmaster XM15's recently. Mine ran $550 with a scope, his ran $600 without. His looked unfired when purchased.

I have a flat top mid-length that consists of a 'kit' from Del-ton, a lower receiver from Spike's Tactical, and a YHM BUIS to complete the setup. With all taxes, fees, and shipping figured in I have about $660 into it. Not the best, but really not bad for the money. The overall feedback on the Del-ton kits is fairly good.

I can have complete stag m4gerys for under $600 new out the door.
RRA about $650-$750 depending on options.
These are just buying upper n lowers.
My ffl makes $10 per transaction 1 gun or 5
Man I need to buy my ffl a valentines day present.

Hi, I call BS on this. Now if your best friend has an FFL and only charges you $10 for getting you dealer pricing, that doesn't mean anyone else on this board is going to get that price, so I fail to see how it is relevant to this discussion other than to brag.
