What's the used gun market like in your area?

When things went nuts last December/January prices went nuts. Most of what is on the used market is so over-priced that a person is better off buying new. Ammo prices are still high but have come down.

Alaska did have some decent in-person deals when I was up there. I picked up a pretty solid 10/22 for $125 when everyone in the lower 48 was complaining during the panic that they couldn't find them anywhere.
Having said that, new guns and used guns at the store and especially ammo in Kotz were high... but only because everything is priced high there.

I think a lot of the ridiculous prices stem from the fact that ads are free. If the gun doesn't sell, they haven't lost anything.
I see a few decent prices but you have to jump quick. Seems like 90% of the retirees are dealing guns for a 2nd income.

Mostly a rip off in south florida as to be expected.

I did find a $700 AR build with $1500-2000 worth of parts recently.

While new guns literally fly off the racks around here, I've been complaining for a number of years now, that there simply aren't any used guns for sale anymore, in my area. It seems like everyone who wants a new gun, just buys it, no trades. I attribute that to the fact that I live in an oilfield boomtown, and everyone seems to have wads of cash. No need to trade.

Having said that, I have made some decent buys in the last month or two. A nearly pristine Colt Diamondback 4" .22LR with two sets of grips for $750. A 98% or better Winchester Model 70 Classic Stainless 300 Weatherby with a Leupold VXII 3-9x40 and Leupold rings and bases for $600. This rifle is ready to go elk hunting just as it is. This afternoon, picked up a rather well used Remington 700 BDL Mountain Rifle in .257 Roberts for $400. The bluing on this one is pretty good, but the stock has quite a few "character" marks. I am thinking about putting this one in a McMillan Edge, if they make one for the Mountain Rifle contour barrel. Should make for a real handy little rifle. Or, just shoot it as it is.

To paraphrase montanaoffroader: our used guns on Armslist seem fairly high.

Regarding ammo, many of these sellers assume that everybody (with no Internet access) is a dumb ignoramus, or desperate.

The last good deal I got was in my LGS. Picked up a Springfield xd9 sub compact bi tone with 3 mags & gear for $399. Armslist is full of people asking $50-$100 more than new prices on used firearms.

I also live in an area where used guns are absurd.

I was thinking about it and I cannot help but wonder if some of these prices stem from people paying full MSRP, or above..

I am lucky enough that I have a couple LGS that sell for substantially less than MSRP. However there are more places that sell for it or more.

I'm honestly not really sure because the only time I do face to face transactions is if someone on gunbroker purchases an item from me and happens to live close. The reason for doing this is in past experiences guns for sale in local classifieds are way overpriced, typically a hunting rifle that bubba missed with the previous season and now wants to dump on a sucker for twice its value. Not to mention selling guns locally is such a hassle with flaky buyers, low ball offers and at least one guy for every sale who shows up with less money than we agreed on thinking he can pull one over on me. Not really worth the effort anymore.

The local Florida trader site looks good on the surface, but many times I try to contact the listers and they either don't respond or they communicate so poorly that I just give up. It's really sad actually.

Not great but it could be worse a lot of people really think that there stuff is "special" for example a used Bersa .380s selling for 400$ ,really you want 400+ for a 300$ gun!?! This one was funny 450$ for a used P95 because he's throwing in 2 mags(they come that way) and 30 rds of ammo (not even a full box) point is be real careful get a fair price pay a little more if you think its worth it but don't be stupid!
