When I went to my last gun show awhile back, I noticed there seemed to be a rather large amount of NIB shotguns, mainly Mossberg and Remington that had those large Barret style muzzle brakes on them. I saw a few other top venting type breaks also but my question is WHY?

Is it some kind of Tacticool thing to do now with these things? Does it really effect the amount of felt recoil? I can understand the point of breacher ends on the muzzle but the added weight of some of these muzzle breaks that they had on these things was ridiculous looking to say the least.

Can someone enlighten me on this. Should I go out and get one for my Persuader so I can be like everyone else?

Thanks

I cant imagine any actual benefit that would be worth the extra weight, so im going to say that mossberg (ive only seen these on mossberg 500's and a mossberg .22 plinker if you can believe that) is trying to increase the "Awwwwww yeeeaaaaahh" appeal factor on a few of their guns. The knowledgeable among us are not impressed.

Wouldn't a brake make it unnecessarily more loud to the people on the back (and side) ends?

I can imagine it now, some damn fool firing away with it, until a fellow rangegoer walks up, politely yanks the shotgun from the man's hands, and gives the end a hard whack! on the table, which results in a slight clink as the brake hits the ground. There you go, sir. Fixed.

I believe that they do no more or less than what they do on a .50 cal - significantly increase noise, and significantly decrease felt recoil. If it's the worth the tradeoff, then hmmmpf.

If it's an actual breacher brake, it's there for holding the muzzle back far enough from the door to engage and divert gases while it's doing it.

The teeth are for jamming it into the wood of a doorframe so it won't slip around before you pull the trigger.

I don't plan on breaching any doors.

And for us grown up kids.

Kentucky Smith, while that's all exactly right, the OP is not talking about those; he's talking about the giant "serpent head" (for lack of a better phrase) brakes found on BIG boomers typically, like .50 bmg and such.

My thingie is bigger than you thingie- please!! They are useless, expensive, and stupid. For CQC use your buttstock (or shoot the SOB) if that fails use you Ka-Bar

Only thing I've found is this, which is a breacher.

And yes, they're for the 5-11 wearing crowd. Wonder how it patterns?

kentucy smith,
re post 13

They pattern quite well and no, I do not wear 5-11.

I saw a bunch of barrel accessories like the muzzle brake come out right after No Country For Old Men. Loved the movie, however it has driven everyone to want suppressors and crazy muzzle brakes on their shotguns. Those breacher ends are kinda nifty but pointless for anyone sans leos. The muzzle brake just looks damn foolish.

Along with the "Roadblocker" there's also the "Rolling Thunder..."

They call it a "Barrel Stabilizer."

But you wouldn't believe how many people think they "need" the ghost ring sights and collapsible stocks on the SPX line...
Frankly, a good bead is more than fine for most applications, and if you're using slugs, I MIGHT see the appeal of the ghost ring sights, but would you really want a collapsible stock on a slug gun? I personally wouldn't. They're taking a pump-action shotgun -- a fairly simple creature -- and over-complicating it. And people are eating it up.

A door breaching muzzle attachment on a 12ga is about as practical as a bayonet on a Civil War musket: a "cool" collectible. Some people do collect "tacti-cool" police stuff as a hobby interest. Some people juggle geese.

Is it some kind of Tacticool thing
Yes.

Although I have a P/G Mossy 500 tactical and I love it.
I don't plan on breaching any doors, but I like the flat black over the blued finish.
