I'm interested in purchasing 1,000 rounds or so of surplus .308 Win ammo to feed my hungry CETME, but there's not much surplus ammo on the market, most of it comes from India with load dates as late as 1998, and it is FAR cheaper ($100/1,000 from J&G Sales) than the alternative Australian and other ammo. The Indian stuff is advertised as non-corrosive, boxer primed, and brass cased...meaning reloadable, as compared with berdan primed competitors.

However, I've heard that some users have experienced problems...but no detail. What's your experience with this stuff? What bullet type and weight is used, and are there any chron tests?

Got a friend that bought 1000 rounds - it is pure crap. Failure to do everything, feed, fire & eject. You might as well take a match to your money if you buy that junk.

Whats wrong with it?

Surplus ammo stored under uncertain conditions made by a Third World country with haphazard quality control.

Well, for starters, the Indian milsurp groups 4 inches at 25 yards. (I can shoot 1.5 inches at least @ that range with anyone else's milsurp)

For finishers, about every 11th round has imperfections at the throat that will jam it up real good: you won't go into battery, and you'll need a mallet to get it out.

Either of those reasons would be enough for me.

AIM has Portuguese surplus, I think. I also think they have Aussie stuff too. I don't own a .308, so take this as a vague recollection.

I"ve been shooting the Aussie surplus in my FAL, it's some good stuff as the others have said.
Picked up a 800 rnd crate from Sportsmans guide, they're right down in St. Paul so I don't need to pay shipping, got 800 for $135 + tax. Wood crate, 5 160 rounds cardboard boxes, 4 40 rounds blister packs per box, 1990 manufacture.

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY. I lived in India for 5 years, and now have to work with lots of Indians here. Everything made there is crap, including the workers, there is so much corruption that everything is done on the cheap and the proper materials are skimmed off to sell on the black market. Better to pay a little more (like for Australian, or Portugese which is around) than to have a load of useless ammo. Nothing is more frustrating than going to the range and having constant misfires, misfeeds or worse, a stuck cartridge in the chamber. the cost of fixing that outweighs the price difference for good ammo.

I made the mistake of buying 500 rounds of the Indian "NATO 7.62 " ammo. This stuff is junk. Out of 8 packages (10 rounds) I opened, there were 5 with case defects that prevented chambering or firing pin strike. The rest were dud primers. I managed to fire 69 out of 80 rounds, and then my rifle had to go to the gunsmith for repairs. That was 7 weeks ago, and I still do not have it back yet.

Save yourself a lot of aggravation and pay a little more for good ammo.

Your rifle will appreciate it.
